This is the Equus Bass 770, a brand-new muscle car which combines the good looks of a 1960s fastback Mustang with the performance and power of a modern-day American muscle car.
The work of Detroit-based Equus Automotive, the Bass 770 might owe its looks to Ford; however, its engine is very much the work of General Motors: a 6.2-litre LS9 V8 borrowed from the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1. As a result, power stands at 640bhp and you get 605lb-ft of torque which Equus claims is enough to propel you from 0-62mph in 3.4 seconds and on to a top speed of 200mph.
Despite its retro styling, the Bass 770 is anything but old-fashioned underneath. There's magnetic suspension with adjustable shock absorbers, a double-clutch gearbox and carbon-ceramic brakes, all of which should go towards providing a slightly less, erm, daunting driving experience than you'd get from a period muscle car.
It's the same story inside too. You get USB connectivity, sat-nav and a colour infotainment screen, all of which would have been the stuff of science-fiction when Steve McQueen was pedalling his 'Stang through the streets of San Francisco in Bullitt.
Unfortunately, there's the matter of the price. Prices start from $250,000 (around £156k) and if you're a bit trigger-happy with the options list you can easily spend more than $300,000 (£187k).
So, would you splash out £156,000 on a brand-new slice of retro-Americana with Ferrari-rivalling performance stats? Let us know by commenting below.
