The Driving Standards Agency (DSA) and the Vehicle Operator Services Agency (VOSA) are to be merged and rebranded as one government agency, it has been announced.

The new agency, the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) will come into existence on 1 April 2014 and will be responsible for setting, testing and enforcing driver and vehicle standards in Great Britain.

Currently, the DSA deals with setting standards for drivers and motorcyclists and for driving tests, while VOSA, as the organisation behind the MOT test, sets and enforces vehicle safety standards.

Transport minister Robert Goodwill said: "The two organisations have a history of working closely together and the merger is an opportunity for the DVSA to provide even better and more efficient customer service to motorists and commercial operators.

"I fully support the new agency and look forward to seeing the DVSA take shape from April 2014."
