UK motorists overwhelmingly support tougher penalties for drivers caught throwing litter from their car windows, a new study has found.
More than 90 per cent of respondents to a survey by Motorpoint support greater on-the-spot fines for those who litter from their vehicles, a problem which costs local authorities millions each year.
New legislation introduced last year allowed councils to almost double the amount drivers can be fined if proven that litter was thrown from their vehicle, with the driver now liable for a charge of up to £150, but with the annual cleanup bill costing around £800 million it appears this is an issue where even tougher sanctions would have strong public support.
