The first production example of the Detroit Electric SP:01 has rolled out of the firm’s UK assembly line.
The Leamington Spa-built SP:01 goes on sale in both Europe and Asia over the coming weeks, with prices for the two-seat pure-electric sports car expected to be confirmed shortly.
With a carbon fibre body and lightweight aluminium chassis, the SP:01 is capable of doing 0-60mph in just 3.7 seconds and has a top speed of 155mph. Powered by a 210kW electric motor producing 285bhp, the model comes with a single-speed automatic gearbox as standard, with optional twin-speed auto or six-speed manual also available.
The SP:01’s battery is integrated into the chassis for added stiffness, and Detroit Electric’s patented home charging unit and power back-up unit enables bi-directional charging, turning the vehicle into a power source for both the grid and the home. The car’s Smartphone Application Managed Infotainment system is Android Auto compatible, and allows users to search for roadside charging points and pre-book charging time. It can be used remotely via GSM, and enables the smartphone to become the interface for the music player, satellite navigation, regenerative braking adjustment, interior lighting and vehicle systems status – such as the level of battery charge, range to recharge and other telemetry.
“We are thrilled to see our first production car roll off the line at our UK manufacturing site,” said Detroit Electric CEO Albert Lam.
“Our first customer is sure to appreciate the unique experience of driving the SP:01 as we’ve worked hard to develop technologies that ensure it is one of the most rewarding pure electric sports cars to drive. Seeing our vision realised is hugely satisfying and we can now focus on fulfilling a growing bank of orders. As our production process builds momentum, we look forward to providing this unique electric sports car to our customers all over the world”.
