At the 2012 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Chevrolet has introduced two new coupe concepts.
Chevrolet has introduced two new concept coupe cars at the Detroit Motor Show, showing the firm's future vision for appealing to younger car buyers under the age of 30. Over the course of the last year Chevrolet has been doing extensive research into the priorities and desires of younger car buyers. The new cars were designed based on the results of this research.
The first of the two new concepts is called the 130R. It is a four-seat coupe with a simple upright profile. The 130R has distinctly performance-inspired styling, with an aggressive front face, bumper flares and straight body side. It is painted in a new red metallic paint and has matte anodized gold wheels. It is rear wheel drive, and draws heavily on Chevrolet's performance heritage.
The turbocharged engine of the 130R also comes with the firm's eAssist technology, including start-stop feature, brake energy recovery and smoothed torque during acceleration.
The second car is a front-wheel-drive model called the Tru 140s. It is a four-seat coupe described by the company as 'affordable exotic', meaning that it is an attractive looking sports car designed with budget conscious buyers in mind. The Tru 140s is based on the same platform as the Cruze and the Chevrolet Volt electric vehicle. It has an extended range compared to the Volt, and comes with direct injection as well as a starter based stop-start system to improve fuel economy.
Both cars have a 1.4-litre Turbo Ecotec engine which delivers 150bhp and fuel consumption of 40mpg.
On the inside of both cars the key element is connectivity, as Frank Saucedo, the Director of the GM North America Advanced Design studio where the two cars were developed, explains:
"This buyer prizes connectivity. Allowing them to stay connected by integrating their personal devices through MyLink and WiFi enabling the vehicle to be their own docking station. The interiors currently exist in 2D only. This allows us the flexibility to continue the discussion and encourage more dialogue as we continue to develop these concepts."
