A recently-announced rise in drink-drive road casualties has led a leading road safety organisation to call for Government action.
“It is regrettable that the UK Government continues to ignore all the best scientific advice regarding what constitutes an acceptable drink drive limit,” said Neil Worth, road safety officer for GEM Motoring Assist.
“To put it in context, you can drive legally in England, Wales or Northern Ireland with an amount of alcohol in your system that in Norway would see you going to prison.”
The current legal limit stands at 80mg of alcohol for every 100ml of blood, with no indication at present that the Government plans to look into reducing that amount. Latest figures show a seven per cent rise in the number of people killed or injured in collisions where at least one driver was over the drink drive limit.
