Motorists in the UK spend an average of £3,453 a year to run their cars, making Britain the most expensive country in the world in which to run a car.

According to a survey carried out by webuyanycar.com, British drivers spend an average of £3,454 ever year on fuel, insurance, road tax and repair bills -- £1,000 more than motorists in the USA and a staggering £2,000 more than drivers in China.

Only Switzerland and the Netherlands come close to matching Britain's overall cost of motoring, with drivers in these countries paying £3,321 and £3,370 respectively.

The bulk of the £3,453 bill stems from the cost of petrol and diesel, with the average UK motorist spending £2,256 a year on fuel, based on an average mileage of 12,500 miles. In France, the average fuel bill is just £2,078 while American drivers spend just £990 a year on fuel. Drivers in oil-rich Saudi Arabia fork out just £129 a year in fuel, thanks to rock-bottom fuel costs of just 7p per litre.

However, it's not just at the pumps that British motorists are being hit -- the UK's average road tax bill of £225 is seven times higher than it is in Spain, Switzerland and Russia, while motorists in Canada, South Africa and New Zealand don't pay road tax at all.

There is some good news however; thanks to recent falls in the cost of motor insurance, Britain's average premium of £667 is roughly the same as it is in the USA and Canada.

Richard Evans, spokesman for webuyanycar.com, said: "Most of us don't stop to think how much each journey in the car actually costs. It’s a massive outlay for the average household."
