Automotive workers in Bridgend have been given a boost with the announcement that a new manufacturing facility is heading for the South Wales town.

It has been confirmed that INEOS Automotive will set up home in Bridgend from 2021, bringing up to 500 jobs with it.

The news comes as a welcome boost for Bridgend, which is to lose the Ford engine manufacturing plant when it closes next year.

INEOS Automotive, a newcomer to automotive manufacturing, is the brainchild of billionaire British industrialist Sir Jim Ratcliffe.  An off-road enthusiast, he aims to create the spiritual successor to the legendary Land Rover Defender in the form of a stripped-back, utilitarian 4x4 to be called the INEOS Grenadier.

“We have looked long and hard at possible manufacturing locations for Grenadier across the world with lots of good options to choose from”, explained Sir Jim.

“The decision to build in the UK is a significant expression of confidence in British manufacturing, which has always been at the heart of what INEOS stands for.”

Work has already begun on the site in Bridgend, which is scheduled to become operational in 2021 and will work hand-in-hand with a sub-assembly plant in Portugal.
