It seems these days that car manufacturers are getting just a little bored with just building cars, opting instead to produce a range of branded merchandise, most of which is complete tat.
You can buy a Porsche smoking pipe or a Maserati dressing gown; a couple of years ago Peugeot even had a go at designing a piano. Now it's Bentley's turn, and the Crewe-based manufacturer has decided to turn its hand to furniture.
Unveiled at Paris's prestigious Maison & Objet interior design fair, Bentley's new 'Home Collection' of furniture is "inspired by the renowned craftsmanship and exquisite materials that characterise the interiors of all Bentley models."
The collection has been designed by Bentley in collaboration with the architect Carlo Colombo and will be built by the Italy-based Luxury Living Group, which already produces luxury furniture.
Pieces in the collection include the Minster sofa, the Butterfly sofa and armchair, the Richmond bed, the Ambassador sideboard and the Harlow armchair.
According to Bentley, the collection combines "the highest quality craftsmanship with a rigorous aesthetic sensibility which links Bentley's inherent qualities of heritage and tradition, exclusivity and style, with the most technical and architectural aspects of furniture design."
Unfortunately, Bentley has not disclosed how much the pieces will cost; however, given that the company's cars aren't exactly bargain basement, we're not expecting IKEA prices.
