With the weather forecasters predicting bad weather ahead, the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has published seven essential tips which it believes will help drivers to be prepared in adverse conditions.
IAM’s chief examiner, Peter Rodger said: “It’s time to do the final preparations for winter. Rain, fog, frost and snow are all typical British weather hazards. A few minutes now could save lots of problems later.”
The advice, issued as part of the IAM’s #wheelsinwinter national campaign, includes checking your lights before setting off, and replacing any broken bulbs before starting your journey as if you are caught driving with lights which are not working you could face a fine of up to £1000. The IAM advises to keep a spare set of bulbs in your car.
Check that your wiper blades are in good working condition, and that your washer bottle has sufficient screenwash. The IAM advises that water alone does not work as well.
Check your brake fluid reservoir, as driving with insufficient brake fluid in the system is dangerous. If in doubt, have the car checked by a mechanic.
Check your tyres regularly for tread depth and damage, and replace immediately if they do not meet the legal requirements. The legal minimum tread is 1.6mm and should be checked with a tread depth gauge. Driving with tyres below the legal minimum could see you hit with a £120 fine.
Check that your anti-freeze is topped up, and is the correct mixture for the colder winter temperatures.
Before setting off in bad weather, the IAM advises that a winter driving kit consisting of a blanket, torch, shovel, and a fully charged mobile phone so you can contact your breakdown service or will help you in the event of an emergency.
Frost can strike overnight, so make sure you are prepared with an ice scraper which is in good working order, along with de-icer.
