Audi has unveiled a new lightweight TT-based concept car for this year's Worthersee festival.
The TT ultra quattro concept is based on the existing TT S, but Audi has lopped an incredible 300kg off the TT S's kerb weight and extracted another 38bhp from the car's 2.0-litre TFSI engine, bringing the total up to 306bhp.
As a result of this, the TT ultra quattro has a power-to-weight ratio of 275bhp per tonne, can hit 62mph in 4.2 seconds, and will do 173mph flat out.
The ultra quattro is purely an engineering exercise and will never see production. Rather it has been built by Audi to demonstrate "how an intelligent mix of materials can bring about considerable weight savings even in existing series-production models."
Audi has trimmed the TT's kerb weight through liberal use of carbon-fibre in the centre tunnel, B-pillars and roof. Magnesium has also been used in the floor and hinge reinforcements to help keep weight to a minimum.
Even the engine has been on a crash diet, with Audi shedding 25kg with a modified crankcase, crankshaft, balancer shafts, flywheel and sump.
But don't imagine that the TT ultra is a stripped-out track day special. Leather seats, air-conditioning, electric windows and an electro-mechanical parking brake are all included as standard, as are compact cameras in the doors which replace the door mirrors, transferring images directly into the cockpit.
The Worthersee festival takes place next month in Germany.
