The biggest endurance race in the world was dominated by Audi in front of a huge crowd on 15th June.
The German manufacturer ran up its 13th success in 16 attempts at the notorious Le Mans event and did so in front of 300,000 spectators.
It was the 82nd running of the race and was a closely fought contest with long periods where it appeared to be completely open. The first few hours were hectic, dominated by Toyota and the weather played its part in dictating events. Two enormous downpours of rain led to the #3 Audi of Oliver Jarvis, Felipe Albuquerque and Marco Bonanomi crashing out following a collision with Lapierre driving #8 Toyota after around 90 minutes.
“We’ve seen many exciting races and celebrated great victories at Le Mans but this success has a very special significance,” said Professor Rupert Stadler, Chairman of the Board of Management of AUDI AG, following the triumphant finish by the two Audi R18 e-tron quattro cars.
“We didn’t enter this race as favourites and in Porsche and Toyota had two very strong rivals. That we managed to win Le Mans again this time in spite of this is a fantastic achievement by the whole Audi squad. We’re tremendously happy and my thanks go to all who have made this success possible.”
Fans said it was one of the most exciting races in Le Mans history. Porsche and Toyota provided great competition which may lead the Audi team to regard this victory as their most valuable one so far.
