Audi has revealed the latest version of its R18 e-tron quattro racer, which will compete in next year's 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Testing of the new LMP1 sports car began today at the Sebring track in Florida just a week after the current World Championship-winning model competed in its last race.

A raft of new technical regulations will be rolled out throughout 2014 and to ensure that the new R18 carries on Audi's impressive Le Mans record, the company has been working on the new model since 2012.

"We've reached a crucial stage in this project," said Audi's Head of Audi Motorsport Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich.

"After building the first prototype, testing on various race tracks is now taking center-stage. The tests are mainly focused on achieving high mileage, coordinating the highly complex hybrid drive systems and working out an efficiency-optimised total package that has never before been as complex as this one."

Audi has won nine out of the last ten 24 Hours of Le Mans and has placed first in both the manufacturers' and drivers' classifications in the FIA World Endurance Championship for two years on the trot.
