Audi has unveiled a new high-performance diesel supercar concept at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

The Audi Nanuk concept is powered by a mid-mounted 5.0-litre V10 diesel engine which develops 544bhp andn7373lb-ft of torque. This means it should be good for 0-62mph in 3.8 seconds and a top speed of 189mph.

Power is sent to all four wheels via a seven-speed S-tronic gearbox and Audi's legendary Quattro all-wheel drive system. But despite the impressive performance figures, Audi claims that if the Nanuk existed, it would be capable of 36.2mpg.

The more eagle-eyed amongst you might have noticed a visual connection between the Nanuk and the ItalDesign Giugiaro Parcour concept which was revealed at this year's Geneva Motor Show. This is because the Nanuk was designed in collaboration with ItalDesign Giugiaro and is designed as the spiritual successor to the Parcour concept. The positive reaction the Parcour received at Geneva was enough to persuade Audi to take the design one step further and design a more true-to-reality concept.

The Nanuk is fitted with a four-wheel steering system which, like many systems of this type, turns the rear wheels in the opposite directions as the fronts at low speeds to aid manoeuvrability, and in the same direction at high speeds to increase stability.

The Nanuk's body is built entirely from aluminium and the body panels are constructed from carbon-fibre. As a result of this weight-saving technology, the concept tips the scales at around 1,900kg. The car sits on 22-inch alloy wheels which hide carbon-ceramic brake discs.

The doors open upwards to reveal a minimalist interior which features a fully programmable instrument cluster and TFT screens situated in the A-pillars which act as rear-view mirrors. At the back, the entire rear of the car lifts up in one piece to reveal the Nanuk's engine, while at the front there's a boot which is big enough to accommodate a set of golf clubs.

Audi claims that there are no plans as yet to put the Nanuk into production.
