The government has proposed introducing a 60mph speed limit along a 32-mile stretch of the M1 in an attempt to cut pollution.

The Highways Agency claims that the restriction, which would be applied from 7am to 7pm, seven days a week, would cut air pollution and reduce CO2 emissions. A lower limit would also bring reduced congestion, improved journey time reliability and increased capacity, the Highways Agency claims.

The lower limit would be enforced between junction 28, near Mansfield in Derbyshire, to junction 35a, just north of Rotherham.

A consultation on the proposal has been published today and, if implemented, the lower limit would likely remain in force for "several years".

The proposal has come under criticism from a number of motoring groups including the RAC who claim that the lower limit could "pave the way for similar restrictions on other sections of motorway."
