The C30 is a car that does the majority of things quite well, and it is a very safe car to drive, but unfortunately it just seems to fall a little short of the rival cars in the class. The engine is impressively economical for a petrol engine this large, and it is also very comfortable and quite good to drive, although maybe it isn’t quite as much fun as some other cars.

PROS:  This version of the C30 offers a good driving experience which is combined with an effective automatic gearbox and a very comfortable cabin.

CONS:  With the highest level of trim this C30 is a fairly expensive car, and the practicality of the car doesn’t quite match some of its very accomplished rivals.

Behind the Wheel

The C30 is quick to respond to the driver’s instruction, with sharp throttle response. The ride is quite firm meaning that the bumpy British roads are felt in the car, but this doesn’t mean that the driver gets the best feedback from the car, with steering feeling a little inert. The driving position is fully adjustable meaning that all drivers should get comfortable quickly and easily, and visibility is generally quite good.

The engine performance is one of the most impressive aspects of the C30, particularly when you consider that it doesn’t suffer much from having an automatic gearbox installed. Acceleration from 0-62mph is a snappy 9.5 seconds, and the top speed of a 127mph means that cruising on the motorway won’t be a problem.

Looks & Equipment

The C30 is a very attractive car that stands on the cusp between a hatchback and a coupe, and the large chunky rear bumper certainly gives it a distinctive rear end, which is complemented by the dark glass of the rear window. To the front the C30 has the headlight and grille combination that has worked very well for other Volvo saloons. Inside the car the trim is quite bold, and the leather seats do add a sense of quality.

Alloy wheels are included as standard with this version of the C30, and there is a selection available from Volvo. It also comes with cruise control and climate control, and the power folding mirrors are useful additions that help to promote the luxury feel of the car. The C30 does have a number of optional extras - Sat Nav and Bluetooth to name two - but most people will find this highly specified version of the car to have plenty of luxury.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

One area in which Volvo and the C30 are very accomplished is in safety, and the highly coveted five star award from the Euro NCAP safety tests has been given to the C30. There is a range of airbags to look after the driver and passengers in an accident, but the driving aids help to ensure that it shouldn’t come to that. Volvo do make very reliable cars, and the record of the C30 does suggest that it is as reliable as other models.

Practicality isn’t too bad in the C30, with plenty of space in the front seats, although the legroom to be found in the back of the car isn’t the best. The boot is also a little smaller than many of its rivals, so although it is quite practical, it isn’t quite as good as its rivals.

Value for Money

One of the biggest issues for many people who are considering buying this version of the C30 is that the list price of £24,020 does put it on a par with some truly exceptional cars. This is why many people will look at alternatives to the C30.

A good aspect of this version of the C30 is that it is able to achieve an average 48.7mpg which is very good for a car with an auto 'box. However, insurance is quite high and depreciation can also be quite significant. The package for the C30 is completed with a three year or sixty thousand mile warranty, and has a one year's roadside breakdown assistance policy, which is fairly average for cars in this class.
