PROS: The greatest aspect of this car is its superb fuel economy, which will mean very low running costs.
CONS: The S trim is the most basic and the Golf Plus is only worth the extra cost over the regular Golf hatchback if you really need the extra boot space.
The Golf Plus delivers an excellent driving experience and is a lot of fun, with sharp and responsive handling. The ride is a smooth and comfortable one, and most notably much more refined than that of its predecessor, with very little noise intrusion. The car also deals with most potholes and road imperfections fairly well.
However the engine can be slightly noisier than the standard Golf and there is a little more body roll.
The top speed is 116 mph and takes 12.1 seconds to travel from 0-62 mph. The car’s power output is small at 104bhp and its torque is standard at 184 lb-ft.
The S trim is the most basic version of the Golf Plus.
Alloy wheels can be purchased for £450 and metallic paint is available for £465.
Air conditioning is fitted, but climate control is not available. Electric door mirrors and electric front windows are standard.
The in-car entertainment is limited to a CD player. However, MP3 connectivity is available for £100, but otherwise the car is very basic in terms of standard equipment. Bluetooth and satallite navigation are both unavailable and leather seats are not an option either.
This car is very practical and it seats five occupants and has five-door access, with generous boot space offering 395 litres when the rear seats are upright and 1450 litres when the rear seats are folded down.
The Golf Plus is covered under warranty for three years and up to 60,000 miles.
The cars security could be improved, as an alarm is not fitted as standard with this model, but has to be fitted for £230. However, central locking is standard and the Golf Plus also comes with driver, passenger and front side airbags.
The Volkswagen Golf Plus S 1.6 TDI BlueMotion Technology 5dr can be bought for £19,970. The trim level is very basic, but still comes with all the essentials. It is a practical car with extra space over the Golf hatchback.
The big attraction of this car is the fuel economy of the Bluemotion technology and with 114 g/km of CO2 emissions and a combined average of 65.7 mpg, running costs will be very low.
The cost over the regular Golf is worthwhile only if that extra boot space is important - otherwise, the regular Golf will do just as well.
