The Suzuki SX4 1.6 SZ4 Auto 5dr has an attractive price tag and gives you the 4x4 looks without the high running costs.

PROS:  Its 1.6 petrol engine is reasonably entertaining providing you use a heavy foot. It has good head and legroom for four adults and it offers alternative styling to a regular family hatchback. It also comes with a decent level of equipment.

CONS:  The engine is a little on the noisy side. The boot is not very spacious.

Behind the Wheel

The SX4's 1.6 litre four cylinder engine develops 118bhp at 6000rpm and 115lb-ft of torque at 4400rpm. Give it some welly and with the revs up it’ll hustle along with surprising rapidity. It has a 0-62 mph time of 12.3 seconds and a top speed of 109 mph. The SX4 rides well over bumpy surfaces and has good grip through the corners where body roll is kept nicely in check.

The SX4’s size makes it feel like a small family car but its raised height and commanding view of the road adds an extra dimension to its appeal. The ride does have a slightly firm edge but it’s never what you would call uncomfortable. Put your foot down and the SX4 grips surprisingly well although at speed, some wind and engine noise is evident.

The driver’s seat is height adjustable but the steering wheel can only be adjusted for rake and not reach but getting a comfortable driving position shouldn’t be a problem for most drivers.

Looks & Equipment

The Suzuki SX4 1.6 SZ4 Auto 5dr is a quirky looking car that straddles several vehicle classifications and whilst it may not be as stylish as some of its crossover rivals, it certainly stands out from the crowd.

The plastics used on the dash aren’t particularly pleasing to the eye or the touch but it all feels solid and well put together. There is also a reasonable amount of kit including electric windows and door mirrors, CD, climate control, immobiliser and central locking all as standard. It also comes with alloy wheels, keyless start and front fog lamps.

Metallic paint is a £399 option.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

The cabin is spacious and offers adequate room for four adults although a fifth would be a squeeze. The boot is surprisingly small offering just 270 litres of load space but the back of the rear seat folds forward to sit behind the front seats and increases space to 1,045 litres.

The SX4 comes with front and side driver/passenger airbags and curtain airbags. Also included are ABS and ISOFIX child-seat mountings.

Suzuki has a good reputation for reliability and the car comes with a three year 60,000 mile warranty.

Value for Money

The Suzuki SX4 1.6 SZ4 Auto 5dr is a pretty good drive, albeit not a thrilling one, it is reasonably well equipped and keenly priced at £13,710. The running costs are also reasonable for a car of this type - you should get 42mpg and road tax is fairly reasonable under VED band G.
