MPG: 54.3
CO2: 119
0-62 Mph: 8.9 secs
BHP: 102 BHP
Range: 394 miles
PROS: A five speed automatic with soft touch gear programming, the 102 bhp engine gives this model a higher top speed than others within the fortwo range whilst acceleration figures undergo a markable improvement. The exclusive design enhances the appearance and transforms this into a striking vehicle which is sure to turn heads.
CONS: The additional power and performance levels are provided at the sacrifice of running costs, with fuel economy, carbon emissions and road tax all lower than other models in the fortwo range.
The fortwo BRABUS Xclusive offers a higher power output of 102 bhp with torque figures of 108 lb-ft at 2500-3600 rpm. This gives the model an additional boost over others in the range and allows it to accelerate from 0-62 mph in a surprisingly fast 8.9 seconds.
This is considerably quicker than other models in the fortwo range. The basic pulse and passion models cover the same speeds in a laborious 13.7 seconds and even the carbrio pulse and cabrio passion lag behind the BRABUS Xclusive at 10.7 seconds each.
With a power-weight ratio of 7.8 kg/bhp the car also benefits from firm handling and strong grip. This makes it agile and quick, with the higher performance reflected in the sportier appearance.
Unfortunately, this additional power comes at the sacrifice of efficiency. Whilst the car achieves a fairly decent fuel efficiency of 54.3 mpg this is much lower than the 67.3 mpg figure offered by the standard fortwo pulse and even fails to match the 57.6 mpg figure offered by both the cabrio models.
With power steering still costing an additional £325, the fortwo BRABUS Xclusive continues to lack some of the standard equipment which is expected given its high price.
Retailing at £15,000, the BRABUS Xclusive is one of the most expensive fortwo models at 50% dearer than the standard models. Whilst the price has increased so drastically, the internal equipment has not and this means buyers could be left feeling unsatisfied with their purchase.
The joint sat nav and Bluetooth option becomes a standard fixture and the automatic gear programme helps to boost the drivability but these are also standard features of the passion and cabrio passion - both of which are substantially cheaper than the BRABUS Xclusive.
However, styling has undergone a larger transformation and wider wheel arches, a sports exhaust, enhanced front spoiler and tinted headlights are found outside whilst the interior benefits from embossed, heated leather seats.
A refined interior gives this model an easy to navigate dashboard that is sure to appeal to most drivers. The enhanced comfort of the luxurious seats and BRABUS Xclusive signature styling kit further enhance driving comfort whilst retaining practicality.
In terms of safety, the BRABUS Xclusive comes with driver and passenger airbags as standard with front side airbags also included. This is a huge advantage over other models in the fortwo range and helps to bring the model up to speed with its competitors.
Despite the additional power, this vehicle is still exceptionally inexpensive when it comes to running costs. It is placed in a fairly cheap road tax band (C).
Green credentials are strong with carbon emissions of 119 g/km. Achieving 54.3 mpg, refuelling is inexpensive and infrequent – keeping running costs at an all time low. However, both these figures fail to match the fortwo pulse which boasts lower carbon emissions of 97 g/km and better fuel efficiency of 67.3 mpg.
With a hefty purchase price of £15,000 when compared to the other fortwo models, the BRABUS Xclusive could disappoint some drivers with its lack of advanced in-car technology. That being said, the level of equipment offered is still substantial for a city car and the additional styling and power performance allows the car to open up when driven outside the city - making motorway driving far more comfortable.
Ultimately, drivers need to evaluate whether the additional power boost, quick acceleration and stylish looks are worth a 50% mark-up from the basic model. Those looking for a sporty car which prompts a reaction from passer-bys will love the BRABUS Xclusive whilst those unlikely to take it on long journeys and looking for a basic city run-around will prefer the cheaper pulse or passion.
