It you wish to combine space with a rewarding driving experience and a little bit more of a sporty look than your average MPV, the Seat Altea XL SE 1.6 TDI CR Ecomotive DSG 5dr could be right up your street.

It extends on the Altea hatchback by offering more boot space. It is more expensive though, so make sure you actually need the room.

PROS:  Spacious and practical, the Seat Altea XL SE 1.6 TDI CR Ecomotive DSG 5dr is a low-cost MPV to run and the 1.6 engine gives a good performance.

CONS:  The refinement could use some work and the estate version costs more than the hatchback if the extra space isn't vital.

Behind the Wheel

The downside of the design means that the upsweep of the rearmost side windows tends to create a blind spot when reversing. The refinement could be improved and the firm suspension, whilst making handling much sharper, also makes the ride quite uncomfortable. There is a quite a bit of wind noise at higher speeds too.

Producing 184 lb-ft torque power at 1550-2500 rpm, and 103 bhp at 4400 rpm, the Seat Altea XL SE 1.6 TDI CR Ecomotive DSG 5dr has a top speed of 114 mph and a 0-62 mph time of 12.6 seconds.

Looks & Equipment

Smooth lines make for a sporty finish and the Seat Altea is probably one of the better-looking MPV’s on the market.

The Altea XL SE comes with climate control, cruise control, front electric windows, side airbags, traction control and a CD player complete with AUX-in socket. Available extras include Bluetooth, satallite navigation and rear parking sensors.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

The Seat Altea has adjustable seats to allow for more room and the XL expands on the room of the hatchback. The seats fold flat and slide in order to cater to the users’ needs. The split-level boot is both large and deep in size and comes in at a capacity of 1604 litres when the seats are down.

The seat can be adjusted by height and the steering wheel can also be moved in order to offer the best comfort possible.

The Altea’s cabin is solidly built and has been created with fine hardwearing materials. The Altea’s VW-sourced mechanics have been thoroughly tested and therefore shouldn’t give the users any problems.

All Altea’s come with anti-lock brakes as standard. Stability control works to keep the car in check. The twin, front, side and curtain airbags act as extra safety features and the Euro NCAP ratings have awarded the Seat Seat Altea XL SE 1.6 TDI CR Ecomotive DSG 5dr 5dr with five stars. Other things to note are the ISOFIX child seat mounts, the fitted alarm and deadlocks.

The Seat Altea XL SE 1.6 TDI CR Ecomotive DSG 5dr comes with a three-year 60,000-mile warranty.

Value for Money

The Seat Altea XL SE 1.6 TDI CR Ecomotive DSG 5dr comes at a competitive price of £20,530.

Running costs are brilliantly inexpensive with a combined economy of 57.6 mpg and CO2 emissions of 129 g/km, which is great for such a big car.

The extra space does come at a price, so make sure you actually need it before upgrading from the hatchback to the estate.
