If you are looking for a spacious family car that looks great, has a refined and comfortable cabin and impressively low running costs, then the Saab 93 SportWagon SE 1.9 TTiD (180ps) 5dr could be the car for you. This handsome family estate is competitively priced and practical, seating five.

PROS:  The turbocharged engine is powerful and the SportWagon is also practical with decent boot space. Its looks are stylish and it is comfortable too, with good equipment levels.

CONS:  Unless you’re on a smooth straight road, the drive is a little rough with body control and handling suffering. The materials used in the cabin look and feel a bit cheap.

Behind the Wheel

This Saab 93’s ride is comfortable when cruising on motorways but taking it down a twisting country road reveals its flaws; the steering feels dull and lifeless, bumps and potholes are felt through the suspension and the car’s overall handling leaves a lot to be desired. On the plus side, wind and road noise are suppressed fairly well.

There’s plenty of adjustment in the driver’s seat and steering wheel to make the driver as comfortable as possible. The dashboard is well laid out with easy to read control, but for the most part it looks and feels quite a way behind the dashes of its rivals.

The 1.9 litre four cylinder turbocharged diesel engine produces maximum figures of 178 bhp (180 ps) at 4000 rpm and 295 lb-ft at 1800-2500 rpm. A 0-62 mph time of 8.7 seconds and a top speed of 140 mph are good figures for a family car and the engine feels suitably refined at cruising speeds.

Looks & Equipment

The Saab 93 SportWagon SE 1.9 TTiD 5dr is a smart and stylish looking estate. Inside the cabin you get a CD player, MP3 connectivity, Bluetooth, electric windows, electric door mirrors, cruise control, rear parking sensors, leather seats and climate control as standard. It also comes with alloy wheels, an alarm and immobiliser and front fog lights.

Metallic paint is a £540 option and Satnav £2,025.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

This Saab 93 comes with six airbags as well as ABS, Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) and stability control.

Saab’s fare reasonably well in the reliability stakes, but they aren’t without their problems. This car comes with a three year 60,000 mile warranty for peace of mind.

There is plenty of room in the front of the cabin, but the rear is tighter than you might expect. It can still seat five, but with three adults in the back, space will be limited. The boot has a wide opening and a low sill which makes loading easy, with 477 litres of space on offer with the rear seats in place or 1287 litres with them folded almost completely flat.

Value for Money

At £24,620, the Saab 93 SportWagon SE 1.9 TTiD (180ps) 5dr is competitively priced and for this price you get a roomy estate car with good boot space, low running costs and a good driving experience, although there is a lack of any real excitement behind the wheel. Unfortunately, it will attract fairly low resale values.

A combined cycle of 62.8 mpg is an excellent figure for a car of this size and with a CO2 emissions figure of 119 g/km the taxes and running costs are low.
