PROS: The Cayman S drives brilliantly, looks fantastic and has a superb PDK gearbox which makes changing gear effortless and almost instantaneous.
CONS: Disappointing level of standard kit.
The Cayman S is fitted with a 3.4-litre flat-six engine which develops 316bhp and 273lb-ft of torque. This makes for a very impressive 0-62mph time of 5.1 seconds and a top speed of 171mph which is very quick indeed. The PDK gearbox fitted to this model makes gear changes extremely quick and easy and also shaves a tenth of a second off the 0-62mph time.
The Cayman handles superbly thanks to its finely balanced chassis and quick, precise steering. It also rides very well for a sports car and is surprisingly refined. Wind and road noise are both well subdued but the engine note is always audible, adding to the car's appeal.
The Cayman S is a very good looking car; you're sure to turn heads at the wheel. The interior is also a paragon of style and durability and the whole car feels beautifully put together.
Standard kit includes air-con, electric mirrors and windows, alcantara/leatherette seats and a CD player. Sat-Nav is priced at £1986, Bluetooth costs £445, MP3 connectivity costs £77, cruise control will set you back £299 and rear parking sensors are priced at £348.
The Cayman has not been tested by Euro NCAP but is supplied as standard with six airbags and stability control which should help keep you safe on the road.
Reliability shouldn't be an issue and the Cayman is supplied with a 3 year unlimited mileage warranty as standard.
The Cayman is also more practical than you'd imagine thanks to its two boots. The front boot holds 150-litres whilst the rear boot offers 260-litres of luggage space.
The Cayman S costs £49,607 which is undeniably a lot of money but it is still good value when compared to the 911 which is nearly £20k more expensive.
Residual values should be very strong and the Cayman S isn't even as pricey to run as you'd imagine. You should get 30.1mpg (combined) and CO2 emissions of 221g/km mean relatively low tax costs under VED band K. Of course, this is all relative and don't for a second think that the Cayman will be cheap to run.
