PROS: The Boxster Spyder is sensational to drive and very fast. It's also comfortable, surprisingly practical and reliable.
CONS: Expensive to buy, costly to run and poorly equipped.
The Boxster Spyder is fitted with a 3.4-litre flat-six engine which churns out 316bhp and 273lb-ft of torque. This allows the Porsche to get from 0-62mph in a lightning-fast 5.1 seconds and on to a top speed of 166mph.
The Boxster Spyder corners like a housefly and is genuinely impressive through the bends thanks to its superb chassis, precise electric steering and excellent suspension. You'll be surprised at how much grip there is and you'll really have to be driving like a pillock for it to come unstuck. Faultless.
The Boxster Spyder comes with a decent amount of standard kit although, at this price, we can't help thinking that Porsche could have been a bit more generous. Alloy wheels, air-con, electric windows, leather/alcantara seats and a CD player are all included as standard. Optional extras include Sat-Nav (£1986), Bluetooth (£445), MP3 connectivity (£77), rear parking sensors (£348), cruise control (£299) and climate control (£1019).
The Boxster Spyder looks fantastic and the kudos of the Porsche badge makes the car very desirable. The interior is beautifully appointed and stylish and the quality of the materials used is exemplary.
The Boxster Spyder is surprisingly practical thanks to its two boots, one in the front and one in the back, which offer a combined storage capacity of 280-litres. There's also plenty of space in the cabin for the two occupants.
The Boxster should also be very safe thanks to driver, passenger and side airbags and stability control.
Porsche make very reliable cars and the Boxster has so far proven itself to be very trustworthy. A 3 year unlimited mileage warranty is included as standard.
The Boxster Spyder is pretty pricey at £47,843, especially considering the limited amount of standard equipment on offer. It is a better car than the standard Boxster but we're not convinced that it's better enough to justify its price.
The running costs are actually fairly reasonable when you consider the Boxster Spyder's performance. 29.1mpg is the quoted combined economy figure and 221g/km of CO2 emissions means fairly expensive tax costs under VED band K.
