PROS: The 508 looks great, is very refined and has a stylish cabin with a quality feel.
CONS: The ride is a little firm.
The 508's 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine develops 156bhp and 177lb-ft of torque. This translates into a 0-62mph time of 8.6 seconds and a top speed of 139mph which is very good for a car of this type.
The ride is a little firm but the steering feels direct and responsive and the petrol engine produces little noise, even at speed. At motorway speeds there is a little wind and road noise within the cabin but, all in all, the 508 is a very capable long-distance cruiser.
The 508 is one of the best looking cars in its class - gone is the awful front end of the old 407. The 508 looks classy and modern thanks to its crisp lines and attractive profile. The cabin is also very luxurious and the whole thing feels well put together and of a high quality.
Considering this is one of the cheaper models in the range, you also get a decent amount of standard kit including alloys, climate control, electric windows, electric mirrors, cruise control, CD player with MP3 connectivity, Bluetooth and Sat-nav. Rear parking sensors will cost you £255 and metallic paint is priced at £450.
The 508 scored the full five stars in the Euro NCAP safety tests and comes fitted with front, side and curtain airbags as standard.
It's not the biggest car in its class on the inside. The rear legroom is a bit tight and the boot is only average at 473-litres.
The old 407 was a very poor car in the reliability stakes and it remains to be seen whether the 508 can improve on this. There are some good signs, though - the whole car feels like much more of a quality product than its predecessor.
At £21,150, the 508 SR 1.6 THP offers excellent value for money considering the good amount of standard equipment.
You should manage 44.1mpg, and CO2 emissions of 149g/km mean that the 508 falls under VED band F, which is fairly reasonable for a car of this type. Group 24 insurance is also fairly competitive.
However, those looking to save the pennies would be well advised to plump for one of the super-efficient diesels.
