The Peugeot 4007 SE 2.2 HDi FAP isn't a bad car but there is little to recommend it in what is fiercely competitive market sector. There are better cars out there.

PROS:  Decent handling, practical, strong engine

CONS:  Expensive, noisy, scratchy interior plastics

Behind the Wheel

The 4007's 2.2-litre diesel engine produces 156bhp and 285lb-ft of torque which is enough to haul the heavy Pug from 0-62mph in 12.5 seconds and on to a top speed of 123mph. The 4007 feels responsive at low revs due to the mountain of torque and pulls cleanly.

The 4007 also handles quite well for a large 4x4 although the ride is bone-shatteringly harsh at low speeds. You also have the option of flicking between 4WD and FWD.

Looks & Equipment

The 4007 isn't a bad looking car but looks a little awkward from some angles and doesn't offer the prestige of its closest rivals, such as the Land Rover Freelander. The interior has a quality feel.

Standard kit includes alloy wheels, front and rear electric windows, climate and cruise control and an MP3-compatible CD player.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

The 4007 has not been tested by Euro NCAP but comes with six airbags as standard along with electronic brakeforce distribution and stability control, which should make it a very safe place to be.

Peugeot don't have the best record when it comes to reliability but the 4007 feels relatively robust and comes with a 3 year/60,000 mile warranty.

The 4007 is billed as a seven seater but the rearmost seats are useless and only suitable for very small children. You get 184-litres of boot space with the rear seats up and 1686-litres with the seats down.

Value for Money

At £26,595, the Peugeot is quite expensive, especially when you consider that the level of standard equipment included is good but not comprehensive.

The running costs will be high but fairly reasonable for a big car like this. You should get around 38mpg (combined) and CO2 emissions of 189g/km mean that the 4007 falls under VED band J, costing £245 a year. Group 28 insurance is fairly reasonable for a car like this.

The 4007 GT 2.2 HDi 156 FAP DCS Auto 5dr is a capable performer, it's just not quite good enough to justify its high price.
