The Perodua Myvi SXi is not as common on UK roads as most other well-known brands. It has a strong build nevertheless and is a good car to drive, for a number of reasons: it’s affordable, cheap to run, practical, competent in town and packed with standard kit.

Poor grip and average handling however, draw the short straw. The driving experience is disappointing but at least the ride is comfortable on smooth roads. The car will appeal to small families that regularly commute to town. With the seats down, the sizeable boot makes it a good pick for weekly or bi-weekly shopping.

PROS:  Very spacious. Attractive looks. Lots of standard kit. Cheap.

CONS:  Poor grip. It gives an average overall driving experience. High road tax for its class

Behind the Wheel

The Myvi SXi has a 1.3-litre, 4-cylinder, 1298cc petrol engine. A maximum power of 86bhp makes it speedy around town and it reaches 62mph in 11.3 seconds. That makes it faster than the Mazda2 and Vauxhall Corsa. However, torque figures of 86 lb-ft prove to be too low for it to keep up with motorway traffic. You will need to work the gear lever really hard to sustain considerable pace on the open road. The 5-speed manual gearbox itself is flimsy and doesn’t help matters.

Suspension is good but speeding over a bumpy road will send jolts through the cabin. Slow down on rough surfaces if you want to maintain a smooth ride. It has low levels of grip so you have to be careful not to take corners at high speed; you risk losing control.

Steering is airy and just right for city driving, but vague on the motorway. The car is responsive and communicates everything that’s going on in the various systems.

The engine is quiet at low speeds but gets loud on motorway speeds, as does wind and road noise.

You will enjoy good visibility both at the front and rear due to the large mirrors and a raised driving position.

Looks & Equipment

The Myvi is stylish and polished. It has a much shorter wheelbase than most cars in the class but it is taller. It is made in hatchback styling, and while the exterior is finished to high standards, the interior is a disappointment. Although the layout is great, the plastics used are cheap-looking.

You will have little need for extra kit as the Myvi comes packed with all the essentials and some luxurious ones too. You get power steering, remote central locking, air con, electric door mirrors, electric front mirrors, metallic paint, driver airbag, passenger airbag, immobiliser and CD player. This is one of the most comprehensive equipment offerings in the class, bearing in mind its price. There are also a couple of cost options that you can get: alloy wheels for £627 and rear parking sensors for £120.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

The Myvi lacks some fundamental safety features such as side airbags, deadbolts and stability control. This is enough to make any cautious motorist worried. As the car is yet to get tested in the Euro NCAP crash test, it is difficult to say how safe it really is.

But, based on the model it is built on, it is quite in order to state that owners have no need to worry. The Myvi’s mechanicals are based on the Daihatsu Sirion, which though defunct, had a remarkable reliability record and a problem-free reign. There are motorists who have had the Myvi for over a year with no mechanical problems whatsoever. Just keep to the set service intervals - every 10,000 miles - and you will enjoy a good relationship with the car. You also have the backing of a 3-year/60,000 mile warranty, 2-year roadside assistance and an 8-year anti-corrosion guarantee.

For its size, the Myvi is quite spacious. Five adults can squeeze in and enjoy plenty of head and legroom. There are enough cup holders, bins and of course the glove box to ensure that you lack no room for your little gadgets, pouches, bottles and snacks.

The boot is smaller than in most rivals. But when the 60/40 split-folding rear seats are folded, they create a flat load bay with a 630 litres capacity, enough for a decent amount of luggage.

It is easy to find a comfortable driving position in the Myvi. The steering wheel does not adjust for reach but you can move the driver’s seat to increase or decrease the distance between the two to a point that suits you. The pedals and controls are well-positioned and user-friendly.

Value for Money

At its current list price of £6,999, the Myvi is cheap, considering the amount of kit it comes with. But do not expect resale values to be that strong. The manufacturer’s warranty and guarantee though, are good offers if you are considering long-term ownership.

Fuel consumption is decent at 48.7mpg, but not the best in the class. At 137g/km, it has high carbon emissions going by class levels and will cost you £115 in annual road tax. You shouldn’t sweat over insurance though, as the car falls under Insurance Group 15 on the lower end of the ranking.
