PROS: The timeless style of the car is certainly very attractive offering open top motoring in real style, and it is a car that is fairly cheap to run and also offers good reliability and resale values.
CONS: The car is completely impractical and it doesn't really offer a particularly good driving experience, with a ride that seems to pass every bump and pothole directly into the cabin.
The Plus 4 doesn't feel like a mass market car, and in terms of the driving experience it does suffer for it. The ride is very hard and will leave the driver keeping an eye out for the bumps and imperfections in the road, and the handling is also fairly sketchy. Cornering at pace is often a more of an adventure that you would expect, with the vague steering meaning you will be frequently correcting. Inside the cabin there is a reasonably good driving position with an adjustable seat, and visibility isn't a problem when the roof is down.
The engine performance delivered by the Plus 4's 2.0 litre engine is not bad at all, with acceleration from 0-62mph achieved in a brisk 7.3 seconds. The top speed of 130mph is also very good, but with the high levels of turbulence and poor refinement means that getting to such a speed does become a real test of endurance.
The Morgan Plus 4 looks as though it is more suited to the 1940's than the present day, but this is actually an attractive feature as it is so very different to any other car on the market. The large chrome grille and long nose mean that the wheels are a little more obtrusive than in other cars, and the headlights are mounted between the nose and the mudguards over the front wheels. The leather trim inside the cabin is very nice, and the dashboard is simple and easy to read, but there is no digital wizardry to be seen here.
Beyond the leather trim the Plus 4 is pretty thin on the ground in terms of equipment, with the options of alloy wheels and metallic paint both to be found on the extras list.
The Plus 4 is a completely impractical car that has no boot to speak of, but on the positive side it can accommodate two adults in comfort when the weather is good. However, the roof is a little bit awkward to use, and with no room for luggage practicality is poor even for cabriolet cars. The reliability of the car is very good as the engine is supplied by Ford and the car is still made by an experienced team of engineers.
The safety of the Morgan Plus 4 is also largely down to the driver, with very few driving aids and no airbags included either. The Plus 4 is a car that is best enjoyed for gentle drives in the sun, as the steering does suffer in poor weather, and driving in this way also makes it much safer.
One of the biggest problems for those who think that a basic car like the Morgan Plus 4 should be fairly cheap is that the purchase price of £37,195 is a large amount of money. It is hard to make direct comparisons with other cars, but the Plus 4 is a lot more expensive than Britain's other two seater, the Caterham 7.
Running costs for the Plus 4 aren't too bad, with the 2.0 litre engine delivering efficiency of an average 40.3mpg. Insurance costs are fairly high for the car, but one plus point is that it does hold its value quite well. The Plus 4 is supplied with a two year unlimited mileage warranty.
Morgan seem to have been making this car for decades, and although the retro looks may not be to everyone's taste, it is certainly distinctive, and with the low production volumes of the car it can...
