The Outlander 2.2 DI-DC GX4 4WD is a spacious, practical and luxurious car but is a lot pricier than the more basic models in the Outlander range. The car's off-road credentials are also poor compared to rival offerings from Land Rover.

PROS:  The equipment on this top of the range model is luxurious, with leather upholstery, heated and powered front seats, satellite-navigation, a sunroof and upgraded stereo.

CONS:  Such luxuries come at great expense and the GX2 offers better value for money.

Behind the Wheel

The engine has decent pulling power and the Outlander handles well for a 4x4 thanks to firm suspension which minimises body-roll through the bends. Despite this, the Outlander is not uncomfortable, offering a smooth and supple ride.

The steering and gearshift are smooth and precise and there is a switch that allows you to change between front and four-wheel drive, or an automatic mode which distributes the power between the axles depending on where it is needed. The engine is reasonably refined but there is still some noise disturbance within the cabin with wind and road noise noticeable at motorway speeds.

The GX4’s 2.2 litre 4-cylinder diesel engine produces 174 bhp at 3500 rpm, while the torque figures stand at 280 lb-ft at 2000 rpm. This gives the car a top speed of 124 mph, while travelling from 0-62 mph takes 9.8 seconds.

Looks & Equipment

The Outlander looks great on the outside with muscular styling and a commanding on-road presence. Inside the cabin, the materials are solid and durable but feel a little bit cheap in comparison to the European opposition. The top of the range GX4 model has the best specifications and comes with alloy wheels, electric front windows, climate control, cruise control, Bluetooth connectivity and MP3 connectivity as standard.

The GX4 boasts features such as heated and powered front seats, leather upholstery, satellite navigation, an electric sunroof, rear parking sensor, reversing camera and rain sensitive wipers that are not available in the GX2 or GX3 trims.

The dashboard is well-laid out and all the necessary controls are easy to find.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

This model’s safety kit includes front airbags, stability control and side and curtain airbags.

An alarm and immobiliser are fitted to deter thieves.

The GX4 comes with seven seats, two more than are on offer in the GX3 or GX2 cars. However, the third row is very cramped and only small children are realistically going to fit. The boot is fairly spacious and features a handy split tailgate which makes loading easier. There is 220 litres of boot space on offer with the seats up and 1,691 litres when the seats are down.

Value for Money

The GX4 is priced at £28,999, which is slightly cheaper than its key rivals the BMW X3 and Land Rover Discovery. It is top of the range and is suitably equipped, offering features such as heated and powered front seats, leather upholstery, satellite navigation and an upgraded stereo that does not appear in the GX3 and GX2 models.

It has good fuel economy at 43.5mpg, and CO2 emissions of 169g/km put the car in VED band H which, while high, is still fairly reasonable for a car of this type. Insurance should also be reasonable under group 26.

The car comes with a three year unlimited mileage warranty which should keep maintenance costs low.
