If you are looking for a well-kitted out sports saloon that delivers performance, practicality and safety in an attractive package, then the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X FQ-330 GSR SST 4dr could be the car for you. With its handsome looks, spacious interior and advanced safety kit, it is a car that both thrill seekers and families can enjoy, making it a versatile option.

PROS:  At an attractive price the Evo offers searing pace, faultless handling and decent space. Reliability is good and resale values are strong.

CONS:  It is expensive to run, has a fearsome thirst for fuel and the ride is a little too firm. The driver’s seat needs more adjustment and the boot is a little on the small side, limiting practicality.

Behind the Wheel

The Evo X FQ-330’s turbocharged 2.0 litre 4-cylinder 16v petrol engine produces a whopping 329bhp at 6,00 rpm, while the torque figures stand at a hugely impressive 322 lb-ft at 3500 rpm. This translates to a limited top speed of 155 mph, whilst the car manages to travel from 0-62 mph in an impressive 4.4 seconds. If that’s not enough, Mitsubishi provides a power upgrade to 354bhp for those looking for additional performance.

The Evo feels and performs just as a road-legal rally car should. There is permanent four-wheel drive and a vast array of electronic stability aids allowing you to harness the car’s monstrous power. Even with the gadgets switched off, the car has incredible grip and stays superbly balanced, providing an exciting and entertaining drive.

The ride is firm, without providing too much discomfort. The Evo is surprisingly refined for a high-powered sports saloon and wind noise is well-contained with some road noise audible within the cabin. The engine delivers a powerful roar at full throttle but this isn’t too intrusive when you’re seeking a more relaxing drive.

Recaro bucket seats come as standard, holding you firmly in place when you’re throwing the car around bends. However, the driver’s seat has no height adjustment and the steering wheel doesn’t adjust for reach so some drivers may find it difficult to obtain the best position. Front visibility is fine though and the dashboard is kept simple and clear to make operating controls easy.

Looks & Equipment

The cabin looks smart and well-assembled. The car comes with alloy wheels, climate control, electric mirrors, electric front windows, and a stereo with in-built hard drive, Bluetooth connectivity and MP3 connectivity all as standard fittings.

It also comes with bi-xenon headlamps, automatic lights and wipers, satellite navigation and metallic paint at no extra cost, making it a luxurious and comfortable car.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

The Evo X FQ-330 combines supercar performance with room for the family. The back seats have plenty of leg room for tall adults, though rear headroom could be improved. The boot isn’t as spacious as it could be as it contains the battery and washer fluid filler and this could be seen as a disadvantage.

The car is one of the safest in its class with the four-wheel drive and advanced stability and traction control systems keep you firmly on the road. It also comes equipped with driver, passenger and front-side airbags and a driver’s knee airbag to protect occupants from harm.

The Evo X FQ-330 also comes with an alarm, immobiliser and deadlocks as standard to protect the car from theft. It even has an advanced tracker system that can identify and remotely immobilise the car if stolen.

Mitsubishi has a good reliability record and provided the Evo is well maintained it should prove dependable over a long period, making it a good investment. The car even comes with a three-year warranty for unlimited mileage to provide further assurances over reliability.

Value for Money

The Evo X FQ-330 is pricey at £33,699 but considering the fact its performance is close to most supercars this may be justifiable to some buyers.

Unfortunately, the Evo X FQ-330 has astronomical running costs coming under the highest road tax bracket: M. It incurs high insurance premiums under insurance bracket 42 as well and the car guzzles fuel at an unprecedented rate as expected for a car of this class. The car isn't exactly green either, with a Euro 4 emissions rating and a hefty carbon footprint of 256g/km.

The less powerful FQ-300 seems to be a better choice as it offers a good range of features at a better price. This means it makes little sense to pay £3,000 more for the Evo X FQ-330 which only offers a slight increase on power.
