The car is currently in its ninth generation. The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution is a high-performance version of the Lancer, with a top speed of 155mph. The car represents excellent value for money, but fuel costs and insurance rates will be high.
Background
The Lancer was first produced in 1973. Three body styles were available, a 2-door or 4-door saloon and a 5-door estate.
The car entered its second generation in 1979 as a 4-door saloon. A variety of trim levels were available, as were 4-speed manual or 5-speed manual transmissions. The Lancer EX was sold in Asia, Australia and South America.
The Lancer Fiore was introduced in 1982 and only continued production until 1983 when the fourth generation of the car was unveiled. It was produced as a 5-door estate and as a 4-door saloon.
The Mitsubishi Lancer entered its fifth generation in 1988, and was now available as a 3-door or 5-door hatchback, in addition to the traditional 4-door saloon version.
The sixth generation of the vehicle, which was first produced in 1991, was available with an automatic transmission (3-speed or 4-speed).
The Lancer entered its seventh generation in 1995. The model received a facelift and was also produced for the first time as a 2-door coupe.
The eighth generation of the Mitsubishi Lancer again sported a restyled exterior. It gained favourable safety ratings and received a mid-generation facelift in 2004.
The ninth and current generation of the vehicle has been in production since 2007. It is produced as a 4-door saloon and as a 5-door hatchback. The car sports a redesigned interior and is now available with a 6-speed twin-clutch transmission.
