PROS: The ASX 4 1.8 Diesel is attractively priced and boasts a well-made and spacious cabin and excellent ride quality. Plenty of standard equipment and safety kit, combined with an excellent reliability record and strong resale values, make it good value for money too.
CONS: The ASX 4 1.8 Diesel needs to be serviced every 9,000 miles. The exterior styling is a little bland and some of the interior plastics feel cheap.
The 1.8 litre 4-cylinder diesel engine produces 145 bhp and 221 lb-ft of torque. This gives it a top speed of 124 mph, whilst travelling from 0-62 mph takes 9.7 seconds.
The ASX feels very agile for a car of its size, feeling composed through the corners with very little body-roll. The ASX offers plenty of grip and a smooth ride but at high speed, both wind and road noise intrude into the cabin. However, the dash is well-designed and simple to use and the gearbox is crisp.
The ASX 4 1.8 Diesel comes with alloy wheels, air-conditioning, cruise control, stereo, keyless entry, engine stop-start, electric mirrors and electric front windows as standard. The car also features rear-parking sensors, a reversing camera, Bluetooth connectivity, MP3 connectivity, satellite navigation and leather seats with metallic paint on the exterior available at additional cost.
The car is very attractive, if not as distinctive as the Nissan Qashqai and the interior is very well styled, if a little cheap feeling.
In terms of safety equipment, the ASX 4 1.8 Diesel is one of the best in its class. All versions come equipped with seven airbags, anti-whiplash head restraints, brake assist, stability control and an emergency-stop signal system. It also offers the reassurance of being awarded a five-star NCAP crash test rating.
The car comes with a three-year warranty with unlimited mileage.
The ASX has a sizeable cabin and the boot space is generous too with 442 litres available even with the seats up. This increases to 1,193 litres when the seats are down. The car also features hidden storage under the boot floor, and seats that fold flat without needing to remove the seat base first.
The ASX 4 1.8 Diesel is priced at £20,199 which is very reasonable considering the high level of standard kit and the sheer amount of car you get for your money.
The fuel economy is excellent at 51.4 mpg and carbon dioxide emissions are fairly low at 145g/km - putting it under tax band D. Insurance premiums fall under bracket 19 which, again, is fairly reasonable for a car of this type.
Servicing costs are high as the car must be serviced every 9,000 miles but overall the ASX 4 1.8 Diesel represent excellent value for money.
