If you are looking for a medium-sized crossover that delivers performance, practicality and safety in an attractive package, the Mitsubishi ASX 3 1.8 Diesel 5dr is an excellent choice. With a spacious interior, excellent specifications and advanced safety kit this car offers a great range of features for buyers.

PROS:  At an attractive price the ASX 3 1.8 Diesel is the most family friendly Mitsubishi available with a well-made and spacious cabin, excellent ride quality and a strong and economical diesel engine. It also has plenty of safety equipment, boasts an excellent reliability record and has strong resale values.

CONS:  The design is a little bland both inside and out compared to some rivals. The ASX 3 1.8 Diesel requires a service every 9,000 miles.

Behind the Wheel

The 1.8 litre 4-cylinder diesel engine provides 145 bhp at 4,000 rpm and 221 lb-ft of torque. This translates to a top speed of 124 mph, with acceleration from 0-62 mph taking 9.7 seconds. The diesel engine has variable-valve timing and there is plenty of pull at low revs.

The ASX is a competent handler, offering saloon levels of roadholding in a crossover package. For ride quality, the car is amongst the best in its class with big tyres and supple suspension making it comfortable to drive on most surfaces.

In terms of refinement, it doesn’t seem any quieter than its main rival the Nissan Qashqai. The turbocharger rumbles and whistles at high revs and both wind and road noise intrude into the cabin. However, the dash is well-designed and simple to use and there is plenty of space around the pedals whilst gear changes are smooth and an elevated driving position offers good front visibility.

Looks & Equipment

The car has a well-styled exterior and the cabin has an attractive design but the plastics are a little cheap. The car comes with alloy wheels, air-conditioning, cruise control, stereo, keyless entry, engine stop-start, electric mirrors and electric front windows as standard. The car also features rear-parking sensors, with a metallic paint finish available for an additional £450.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

The ASX has a sizeable cabin and the boot space is generous too. You get 442 litres of boot space with the seats up increasing to 1,193 litres when the seats are down. The car also features hidden storage under the boot floor and seats that fold flat without needing to remove the seat base first.

In terms of safety equipment, the ASX is one of the best in its class. All versions come equipped with seven airbags, anti-whiplash head restraints, brake assist, stability control and an emergency-stop signal system. It also offers the reassurance of being awarded a five-star NCAP crash test rating.

You get a three-year warranty that includes unlimited mileage.

Value for Money

The ASX is priced at £20,199 which is very reasonable for the equipment on offer and one of the cheapest in its class. It offers excellent fuel economy too, with a combined figure of 51.4 mpg with carbon emissions of just 145g/km putting the car under a manageable road tax band D. Insurance premiums are also affordable under bracket 19.
