PROS: A car which oozes class, this small family hatchback is a great style icon and offers one of the best resale values of any small car on the market.
CONS: Practicality is not that great and there is limited space. The interior also lacks the high quality feel expected from a car with this type of reputation.
The Mini Hatch Cooper is powered by a four cylinder engine which delivers a maximum power output of 122 bhp at 6000 rpm with torque figures of 118 lb-ft at 4250 rpm. The car has an impressive top speed of 122 mph whilst acceleration is fairly good, reaching 0-62 mph in just 10.4 seconds.
The engine delivers a good level of response, which is matched by comfortable handling. The overall driving experience is fun and lively. When driving particularly fast, road and wind noise is a little bit of a problem in the Mini Hatch Auto 3dr.
Most motorists are swayed to buy a Mini because of how they look. They are a classic style icon and while this car does look good from the outside, on the inside the interior is something of a let down.
The Mini Hatch Cooper SD 3dr comes with power steering, central locking, stability control, alloy wheels, air conditioning, electric door mirrors, electric front windows and an advanced stereo system with CD and MP3 connectivity. If you want upgrades such as climate control, this will cost an additional £235. Extras such as cruise control, a built-in sat nav, Bluetooth connectivity, rear parking sensors and leather seats are also available as chargeable extras.
For a Mini there is a decent amount of head and legroom within the cabin. The rear seats should be comfortable enough for most passengers, too.
Getting in and out of the car can be a bit bothersome however, thanks to a low door opening. Also a boot which offers just 160 litres of space with the seats up is less than ideal for a family car. Folding the seats down will increase the storage space to 680 litres, but then you lose space for passengers.
In terms of comfort, there is a lot of room for adjustment in both the seats and the steering column so most drivers should be able to find a comfortable driving position.
With a three year warranty on unlimited miles, the car is reliable for a family run around, despite some space issues. The car is safe too: it achieved a full five star rating for occupant safety in NCAP crash tests thanks to standard air bag fittings. An immobiliser and alarm is also fitted as standard.
Priced at £16,055 the Mini is at the upper end of the scale within its class. However, the strong resale values associated with the Mini brand make the car a wise investment.
Running costs are fairly manageable with insurance premiums falling under insurance group 17 and road tax falling under tax band F. These combine with fuel economy of 44.1 mpg to provide a car which is stylish, efficient and capable of great performance credentials.
Carbon emissions are fairly average at 150 g/km, putting the car into a fairly mid-range tax band (F). Overall, value for money is not too bad.
