For people who aren't looking for a large car that will need to carry a family, then the Coupe may just be the bundle of fun on a budget that they are looking for. The pricing is well within the range of many people, but those looking for a refined car will need to look elsewhere as it can be quite noisy and the ride a little firm.

PROS:  The Coupe is still great fun to drive, and when compared with the rivals for small coupe vehicles, this Mini is actually very competitively priced, and still has the wonderful Mini style.

CONS:  With only two seats it is hugely impractical, and those in the cabin will experience plenty of noise from the wind and the engine.

Behind the Wheel

Mini handling is well known for being accurate and fun, and this is certainly the case with the Cooper S. The ride is quite firm, but this is one of the sacrifices for the great feedback that the driver receives behind the wheel. Steering is accurate and precise, and the driving experience as a whole is a great testament to the Mini designers. The driving position can be fully adjusted to suit the individual's preference, meaning that the driver will be able to sit in the perfect position to see the road ahead, although rear vision is quite limited because of the small rear window.

In terms of the engine performance, there is no doubt that the Cooper S engine is certainly wonderfully designed, and can produce a snappy acceleration from 0-62mph of 6.9 seconds. The top speed of 143mph is plenty for those drivers who will want to push their car a little harder, but is what would be expected from a car with such a sporty pedigree.

Looks & Equipment

In terms of the looks of the Mini Coupe, it is bold rather than subdued, which is exactly what would be expected. The multi-coloured vehicle comes with two stripes down the centre of the car, which is matched with the colour of the roof and the wing mirror. The alloy wheels that are included as standard also help complete the bold, fun look of the car. Moving to the inside of the car, the speedometer is mounted on the centre console, which is certainly an innovative feature, and the coloured interior continues the bold look.

Although Mini cars are well known for having an extensive range of optional extras, the Coupe does have a few luxuries included, with air conditioning and cruise control to help make the driving experience pleasant. The stereo system is also quite good, but those who are looking for luxuries like leather seats and satellite navigation may find they will add significantly to the price.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

There is no doubt that the Mini Coupe hasn't been designed with practicality as the main focus, but when compared with other coupes it is worth noting that it does have good boot space. It is also possible to access the boot from within the vehicle, through a removable plastic door which is where the rear seats would normally be. Mini is also known for producing reliable cars, so most people won't need to take advantage of the warranty provided.

In terms of the safety tests, the Coupe is yet to undergo the Euro NCAP safety test, but it does have four airbags included as standard. It also has a number of driving aids included as standard, which help to keep the car on the road.

Value for Money

The list price for the Cooper S version of the Mini Coupe is £19,775, which can be competitive or expensive depending on how you compare it. It is certainly more expensive than the average Mini, but equally it is cheaper than the Audi TT or VW Scirocco coupes.

In terms of the fuel efficiency of this version of the Mini Coupe, the engine can average 48.7mpg, which equally isn't bad at all for a sporty car such as this. The insurance group is higher than the Mini hatchback, but there are other coupes that are more expensive to insure. The final package is complemented with a three year unlimited mileage warranty, and also has three years' breakdown cover.
