The SLS Coupe AMG with the doors open is probably one of the most striking and dramatic cars that you will ever see, but it also delivers genuine supercar performance that has been tuned by the experts at AMG. Practicality may have gone out of the window with this car, and the engine noise is always audible in the cabin, but it does have a very good level of equipment.

PROS:  There is no doubt that this is a beautiful car that has bags of desirability, and the 6.2 litre engine delivers performance by the bucket-load, and a driving experience that is absolutely sensational.

CONS:  The interior may not be quite as luxurious as you might expect, and although the gullwing doors make this a dramatic-looking car, they don't offer the practicality of conventional doors.

Behind the Wheel

The driving experience with the SLS Coupe AMG is absolutely superb, and the thrust from the engine is equally thrilling. There's plenty of grip and the suspension allows for plenty of feedback through the steering wheel. The steering could be a little crisper, but that really is a minor quibble. The driving position is excellent and offers plenty of adjustment in terms of the driving seat and the steering wheel, but visibility is not the best.

Performance from the 6.2 litre engine is absolutely sensational, and 62mph arrives in an electrifying 3.8 seconds. The electronically-limited top speed of 197mph is going to be unattainable for most drivers, but take this car onto a track and it quickly becomes obvious that this is one of the fastest cars money can buy.

Looks & Equipment

When it comes to discussing the looks of the SLS Coupe AMG, the gullwing doors really are the elephant in the room. The doors are inspired by the SL coupe of the 1950s and are nothing more than a gimmick although, you'd have to say, they do look rather good. This is truly a beautiful car, and it is understandable that the SLS is one of the most desirable vehicles currently on the market.

In terms of the equipment, leather seats and alloy wheels are features that would be expected, and there are a few pieces of equipment which do suggest that it isn't a completely stripped out sports car. Satellite navigation and Bluetooth connectivity are all built in, and there is also climate control and cruise control making it a car that is more of a grand-tourer than a track day special.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

The SLS is a sports car that has primarily been designed for performance rather than practicality, but it does still have a reasonable amount of boot space, and the luxury inside the car does make it comfortable for longer journeys. Mercedes-Benz have an excellent reputation for reliability, and there is no doubt that the SLS will also be very reliable.

In terms of the safety equipment, the SLS does come with airbags should the car ever become involved in an accident, but it is the driver aids that channel the power effectively that really make this a safe car.

Value for Money

Unsurprisingly, the SLS is not cheap and at £168,395, it costs more than the average house. However, there are many supercars that have much higher prices, and many do not offer such a convincing overall package as the SLS Coupe AMG.

Fuel efficiency isn't particularly good from the 6.2 litre engine, but again most buyers will already expect it will be costly at the pumps. The average 21.4 mpg isn't the worst among the supercar class though - a similarly priced Lamborghini Gallardo will struggle to top 18mpg. Insurance costs are going to be sky high, but the desirability means that depreciation shouldn't be too bad at all. The SLS comes with the standard Mercedes-Benz three year warranty and roadside breakdown assistance.
