Although the SLK 350 Blue Efficiency is a great open top, with a powerful engine and a speedy 0-62mph rate, the price is high for buying and running. The Mercedes’ competitors Porsche and BMW have much better sports cars for this price and the equipment that comes as standard is quite disappointing. Despite the engine power, the drive and handling are poor.

However, the emissions are fairly low for a V6 engine and the car looks great. The open top has loads of room for the passengers and boot size is fair.

PROS:  The SLK 350 Blue Efficiency has a great engine and loads of speed. It looks good and has fairly low emissions for the size of the engine.

CONS:  This is an expensive car to buy and the engine does little for the efficiency. The equipment is lacking for a sports car of this price range. The drive and handling are not great.

Behind the Wheel

The SLK engines all vary vastly in performance, but the 350 is very powerful and quick.

The handling of the SLK is not great and the suspension is quite uncomfortable. Steering is not too responsive and the stability of the car is a bit unsteady.

The engine is 3498cc and uses unleaded petrol with a fuel tank capacity of 60 litres. There is a seven-speed automatic gearbox, which provides smooth acceleration.

The engine is fairly refined and the open car has hardly any road or wind noise.

The 350 Blue Efficiency has a 302bhp engine delivering 273lb-ft of torque at 3500-5250rpm and reaches 0-62mph in 5.6 seconds with a top speed of 155mph.

Looks & Equipment

The interior of the SLK is well-designed and high-quality, living up to the reputation of Mercedes-Benz as a stylish manufacturer, although some of the features look a little cheap.

The seat and steering wheel adjust comfortably and the dash is fairly comprehensive, although the controls are quite small. The pedals are a little offset, which can be uncomfortable over long distances.

The 350 Blue Efficiency comes with leather seats, air conditioning, power steering, satellite navigation, cruise control, stability control, alloy wheels, Bluetooth, MP3 connectivity and stereo as standard, with optional extras including metallic paint for £695, rear parking sensors for £680 and climate control for £495.

For fuel economy, the SLK has a start/stop system, which allows for great efficiency and low CO2 emissions.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

The SLK comes with all the safety equipment you would expect in a high-quality car including driver, passenger and front side airbags, alarm and immobiliser as standard. It also has the stability control, Attention Assist system, which alerts tired drivers, the Pre-Safe anticipatory crash-protection system and a pop-up bonnet to protect pedestrians in the case of a collision. The hard top is much more secure than the cloth roofs too.

Mercedes-Benz has a great record in reliability and the SLK should be no different.

The boot is fairly small with the roof up offering 225 litres, and only 335 litres with the roof down. The SLK sits two quite comfortably, although naturally the roof reduces head room for those who are really tall.

Value for Money

The running costs are modest with the SLK due to the efficient engine stop/start system, although the size of this engine does bump up the economy. The 350 Blue Efficiency model costs £44,725 and has a combined economy of 39.8mpg and CO2 emission rate of 167g/km.

The SLK is not a cheap car and running costs and CO2 emissions are high with an engine this size.

You get quite a bit of kit as standard, but nowhere near as much as you might expect for the price. Other manufacturers like Porsche and BMW offer better value for money.

The resale value on the SLK is excellent. Mercedes-Benz promise good service and reliability as well.
