The Lexus GS 450h isn’t just a luxurious car, but an environmentally friendly one. A creative hybrid, the GS 450h gives a polished performance. But this car is very expensive for a luxury car and faces tough competition from other luxury cars like the BWM 520d SE, Mercedes Benz E220 CDI and the Jaguar XF 2.2 diesel SE which are a whole lot cheaper.

PROS:  The GS 450h is a handsome car with a powerful and smooth engine. The car is a top of the line luxury model fitted with lots of high end equipment.

CONS:  The GS 450h is slightly un-engaging to drive. The rear headroom in the car is tight for the taller traveller and the seats are not very supportive.

Behind the Wheel

This car glides over the road, soaking up bumps with the same ease as the Jaguar XF. Unfortunately, road noise can become an unwelcome guest when travelling on badly maintained A roads or motorways. This isn’t a sports car but it can take on twisting B roads at ease.

The 3.5litre V6 engine delivers a good performance going from 0-62mph in less than 6 seconds with a top speed of 115mph. It gives the car a power of 341 bhp at 6400 rpm with torque figures at 272 lb-ft at 4200 rpm. At slower speeds, the car runs silently on its electric motors. However, with excellent performance the car sacrifices on fuel economy with a poor mileage of 36.7 mpg.

Looks & Equipment

The GS 450h is the flagship model of the Lexus range. The discrete boot lid spoiler and 18 inch alloys are unique to this model.

This car is both elegant outside and luxurious inside. The technology in the car includes stability control, alloy wheels, climate control, electric door mirrors, electric front windows, cruise control, MP3 connectivity, Bluetooth, satellite navigation and a CD system.

There are a whole range of neatly arranged buttons around the centre console. A high tech colour screen sits in the middle of the dash and does everything from telling you about the heating, the audio settings, the SAT-NAV, to the battery status. Leather heated seats are comfortable and electronically adjustable.

All Lexus models come well equipped with gadgets, including a dash mounted screen, a navigation system, an audio system, and telephone options. The rear parking camera superimposes guide lines on the screen so the driver can see if the car will fit in a space. The audio system with a 5.1 surround system is currently one of the best in any car on the market.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

The car comes with a tiny boot. As the seats don’t fold down, the boot space cannot be increased.

The car has a very spacious cabin. There is plenty of leg room in the rear, but because of the sloping roof, head room is restricted for a taller traveller.

With a 5 star EuroNCAP rating, the car comes equipped with a high end safety kit called the Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM) system which includes electronically-controlled braking, brake assist, brakeforce distribution, and traction and stability control. The car also comes with a Pre Crash safety system which anticipates an imminent crash and as a response, tightens the seatbelts and activates the brake assist. This car is fitted with dual-stage passenger and driver airbags, along with two front knee, four curtain and front and rear side airbags.

The Lexus range enjoys good dealer services but incurs heavy maintenance and repair costs.

The car has poor green credentials with a EURO5 emissions rating and a carbon footprint of 186 g/km. It also incurs heavy running costs coming under the Road tax band of I and insurance premium group 41.

Value for Money

The car is priced at £44,615. The car comes equipped with a reliable engine which gives years of trouble-free service. It can be used for day to day driving from school runs and grocery shopping to long road trips and holidays. The car is made for those with fat wallets. The combination of the car’s performance and the Lexus brand grant it excellent resale values.

Unfortunately, with poor fuel economy, owners will spend a lot of time at the petrol station if they buy this car. Even though it pays for itself with good dealer services so customers can enjoy it for longer, the maintenance costs are high. The car is quite expensive and there are rival car ranges that are just as good, and cheaper.
