Do you only have an automatic licence? If the answer is no, buy the manual Picanto - it's cheaper, faster and is road tax and congestion charge exempt. This automatic isn't a bad car though, with a good quality interior and a good level of standard equipment for the money.

PROS:  The Picanto is well equipped, good looking and has a very high quality interior.

CONS:  The engine is noisy at higher revs and the steering is numb and lifeless. The ride is also jarring and the automatic gearbox harms the performance.

Behind the Wheel

The Picanto's 1.25-litre petrol engine develops 84bhp and 89lb-ft of torque. 0-62mph takes a fairly unimpressive 12.9 seconds thanks to the car's automatic gearbox and flat out you'll be doing 101mph. Unfortunately, the engine needs to be worked hard to give its best which would be forgiveable if it wasn't very noisy at high revs.

The Picanto is no fun to drive either thanks to a lack of grip and numb, insipid steering. The ride is also very firm and the Picanto is not a pleasant place to be at high speeds thanks to its noisy engine and poor overall refinement.

Looks & Equipment

The Picanto is a very good looking car both inside and out and the quality of the interior is superb. It really is uncanny just how much high quality plastic Kia have managed to fit into the Picanto. Very impressive.

Standard equipment includes Bluetooth connectivity with voice recognition, power steering, central locking, stability control, alloy wheels, air conditioning, electric door mirrors, electric front windows, rear parking sensors and a CD player with MP3 connectivity.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

The Kia Picanto is fairly spacious. It can accommodate five people comfortably and there is decent leg- and headroom for the passengers in the rear. On the downside though, the boot is a little small with just 200-litres on offer with the rear seats up and 605-litres available with the rear seats down.

To ensure safety and to avoid accidents, the Kia Picanto has ABS with electronic brakeforce distribution. It also has stability control and is equipped with six airbags.

The Picanto rated highly in the 2011 J D Power Survey and comes as standard with a 7 year unlimited mileage warranty.

Value for Money

The Kia Picanto 1.25 Halo Auto is priced at £12,295 which is relatively good value for money for a small supermini like this although we'd have to say that the cheaper Picanto models offer better value.

It won't be expensive to run but this is the priciest model to keep on the road in the Picanto range. You should achieve 53.3mpg on the combined cycle and CO2 emissions of 125g/km put the Picanto under VED band D which is disappointing - most of the other Picantos fall under VED band A, entitling them to free road tax and congestion charge exemption. Group 6 insurance, however, is very reasonable.
