The i40 Estate 2.0 GDi Premium is a little bit pricey - you can get a fairly decent Mondeo Estate for this money - but it's not a bad choice if you're in the market for a family estate car. However, the diesel engines are much more economical and an oil burner makes much more sense in a car like this.

PROS:  Practical, spacious, stylish, surprisingly quick

CONS:  Not as economical as the diesel versions

Behind the Wheel

The i40 Estate's 2.0-litre engine develops a healthy 174bhp and 157lb-ft of torque. This means 0-62mph takes a respectable 9.2 seconds and the i40 Estate will keep on accelerating up to 132mph.

The handling is nothing to write home about - the steering feels vague and the i40 doesn't offer the poise of its European rivals - but the ride is surprisingly good, absorbing bumps and imperfections on the road surface with ease.

Looks & Equipment

Remember Hyundais of old? The Accent? The Elantra? Well, cast these from your memory and just look at the i40 Estate. Hyundai are making some good looking cars these days and this is no exception. The whole car looks crisp, modern and, above all, European.

The interior is quite nice as well and feels well made from decent quality plastics. You also get an impressive list of standard kit including alloy wheels, climate control, electric windows and mirrors, an electric sunroof, cruise control, rear parking sensors, leather seats, sat-nav, Bluetooth, CD player and MP3 connectivity.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

There is plenty of space in the i40 Estate and a good amount of headroom and legroom within the cabin. The boot is also a very generous size, offering 553-litres of storage space with the rear seats up and a massive 1719-litres with the seats folded down.

The i40 should also be very safe and achieved the full five stars in the Euro NCAP crash tests. Reliability shouldn't be an issue either thanks to Hyundai's impressive five year/unlimited mileage warranty.

Value for Money

The i40 Estate 2.0 GDi Premium is priced at £23,795. Although this is very reasonable given the amount of standard equipment on offer, at this price many buyers are going to be tempted by the European opposition.

Running costs will also be relatively high for a car of this type and you'll struggle to top a combined 40mpg. CO2 emissions of 169g/km also mean relatively high tax costs under VED band H. However, insurance should be cheap under group 18.
