If you are looking for a sensible and practical family car which still manages to look really good then you will definitely want to take a closer look at this car.

PROS:  Hyundai have done a brilliant job with the exterior styling of the i40 estate, making this an amazingly sporty and sexy looking car for a large family estate. The interior does not disappoint either.

CONS:  Unfortunately the engine performance does not match up to the sporty looks, especially at low revs. The 1.7 Litre CRDi engine does not have much power for such a big and heavy vehicle.

Behind the Wheel

The i40 estate's diesel engine delivers 134bhp at 4000rpm and torque of 240lb-ft at 2000-2500rpm. The top speed is decent at 124mph and the acceleration not too bad either, taking the i40 from 0-62mph in 10.6 seconds, but the lack of power does show through at times.

The steering can also have a tendency to pull back to centre, and the front wheels do occasionally seem to lose traction.
.

Looks & Equipment

There is no doubt that this is a good looking car on both the inside and out, and that it comes with plenty of equipment on board.

The sweptback headlights, steep windscreen, smart alloys and sporty contours are a big jump forward for Hyundai.

And once you get into the car you will find that it also has a smart, modern and attractive cabin, along with an equipment list which includes stability control, cruise control and climate control as standard. You also get rear parking sensors, power steering, electric windows and door mirrors, alarm & immobiliser, and airbags for the driver and passenger as well as in the front-sides.

For entertainment you get a good quality system with CD player and with MP3 and Bluetooth as standard.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

In addition to the good looks and extensive equipment list, the Hyundai i40 Estate 1.7 CRDi really stands out for its impressive fuel efficiency - managing 62.8mpg - and low emissions of 119g/km, which put it into the a low road tax band of 'C' to go with the insurance group 16 rating.

With an overall NCAP safety rating of 5 you and your family can feel secure in the i40 estate, and Hyundai are obviously confident about the car's reliability, offering a 5 year unlimited mile warranty.

Storage space comes in at 553-litres with the seats up, and a substantial 1719-litres with the seats down.

Value for Money

With impressively low running costs and the kind of sporty looks and attention to detail which you would expect from a more expensive car than the £22,295 that the Hyundai i40 Estate 1.7 CRDi will set you back, you should have no complaints about the value for money that you are getting from this car.
