The Kuga is Ford's largely pointless entry into the compact crossover market. Make no mistakes, it is an excellent car, but we can't really see why you'd buy it. It's not especially practical and it's very expensive but, on the plus side, it drives well, looks good and is very comfortable.

PROS:  The Kuga looks good, drives well, delivers respectable fuel economy and is exceptionally safe.

CONS:  It's very expensive and isn't especially practical. Why not just save £5k and buy a Focus instead?

Behind the Wheel

The Ford Kuga is a great drive. Although its size and height greatly compromise its ability to go around corners, the Kuga is still quite agile and grips well through the bends. Despite its outdoorsy look, the Ford Kuga is not really suitable for off-road use. The ride is generally comfortable.

The 1997cc engine develops 161bhp at 3750rpm and 251lb-ft of torque at 2000-3250rpm. The Kuga goes from 0-62mph in 9.9 seconds and on to a top speed of 119mph which is respectable for a car of this type.

Engine refinement is impressive but wind and road noise are audible at higher speeds.

Looks & Equipment

The Kuga looks very stylish indeed, both inside and out, and the quality of the materials used in the cabin are very good indeed.

Standard equipment includes 17-inch alloy wheels, air conditioning, electrically adjustable heated door mirrors, ABS, traction control, ESP, a leather steering wheel, keyless go with start button, front sports seats, cruise control, automatic windscreen wipers and headlights, dual-zone climate control, leather trimmed gear shift and part leather upholstery. Sat Nav and metallic paints are optional extras.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

Buyers of the Ford Kuga are likely more interested in the vehicle’s practicality as a medium-sized family car rather than its credentials as an off-roader. There’s no problem if this is the case since the Kuga has enough storage space. The boot is quite large, offering 360 litres, expandable to 1355 litres with the 60/40 seats folded.

The Ford Kuga scored five stars in the Euro NCAP crash tests and is fitted with six airbags, ESP with anti-rollover control, traction control, ABS and electronic brake assist.

The Kuga did exceptionally well in the 2011 J D Power survey and should therefore be very reliable. The Kuga's engine has been around since 2000 and should therefore be robust. The Kuga is offered with a 3 year/60,000 mile warranty.

Value for Money

The Kuga 2.0 TDCi Titanium (163ps) Powershift is priced at £27,195, which is pretty competitive when compared to its rivals. However, it is very expensive when you consider that it's basically a jumped-up hatchback with off-road styling.

It should be relatively cheap to run, managing a respectable 41.5mpg on the combined cycle. CO2 emissions are 179g/km which means the Kuga falls under VED band I. Group 21 insurance should also be reasonable.
