The Galaxy offers a fantastic amount of interior space and practicality for a reasonable price. The 1.6-litre diesel is a bit asthmatic and the 2.0-litre unit is a much better bet. But if you're looking to ferry six passengers around in relative comfort, you really can't go far wrong with the big Ford.

PROS:  Seven-seat practicality, good looks, cheap to run.

CONS:  The engine has to work hard to shift all this weight around. The 2.0-litre diesel is much better and not much more expensive.

Behind the Wheel

This Galaxy has a top speed of 118mph, which is quite fast for an MPV. 0-62mph takes 11.9 seconds, which is not especially fast but perfectly adequate for a family car.

The diesel engine produces a decent amount of power but it lacks torque at lower revs. The 2.0-litre diesel is a much better bet and isn't much more expensive.

The handling is better than you would expect from a large people carrier such as this and the ride is very smooth indeed.

Looks & Equipment

The Galaxy is quite an attractive car despite its size and people-carrier shape.

The Galaxy also comes with plenty of kit including cruise control, Bluetooth, CD player with MP3 connecivity, alloy wheels, climate control, rear parking sensors, electric windows and electric mirrors all fitted as standard.

Metallic paint will cost you an extra £525 and sat-nav will set you back £1,300. If you really fancy speccing your Galaxy up, you can have a rear seat entertainment system fitted for £1750.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

The car has a good amount boot space. When the rear seats are folded there is a large 2325 litres of free space, and when the seats are up there is 300 litres to play with.

In terms of security, the car is well secured as the car has central locking as standard, and an alarm is also fitted.

The car is covered under warranty for three years, or up to 60,000 miles.

The Galaxy should also prove to be a very safe car thanks to driver, passenger and side airbags fitted as standard.

Value for Money

The Ford Galaxy Titanium X 1.6 TDCi (Start/Stop) 5dr is priced at £29,845 which is fairly good value. Low CO2 emissions also make for low road tax costs, with the Galaxy falling under VED band E. This model is also very fuel efficient, returning 54.3mpg on the combined cycle. It is therefore very good value for money.
