Financially the The Ford Focus Zetec S 1.6 TDCi makes a lot of sense, comparing well to other medium family hatchbacks on the market. It is solid, efficient, and comfortable to drive, but there is very little to get excited about.

PROS:  The Zetec trim, which adds alloy wheels, sports seats and leather steering wheel makes a big difference to the look and feel of the Ford Focus, providing and enhanced level of style and quality. The 1.6 TDCi engine performs well in the middle-range and you can go a long way on one tank of diesel.

CONS:  The 1.6 TDCi engine is somewhat lacking at low revs, and pretty noisey at high revs.

Behind the Wheel

The 16 valve 4 cylinder diesel engine in the Focus delivers 117bhp of power through the 6-speed manual transmission and allows the car to accelerate from 0-62mph in 10.9 seconds and reach a top speed of 120mph. This is good, but not great, so if performance is important to you it may be worth looking at the 148bhp turbocharged 1.6 Ecoboost instead.

The handling is excellent -- Ford really does know how to make a car handle well -- and the ride is smooth and compliant, only losing its composure on the roughest of road surfaces.

Looks & Equipment

You get some nice alloys with the Zetec trim, but there is nothing special about the exterior styling of this car. However, it does come with a reasonable set of features, including central locking, stability control, electric door mirrors and windows, air conditioning, driver, passenger and front side air bags, alarm and immobiliser, and a decent sound system with CD player plus MP3 and Bluetooth connectivity.

You can choose to add rear parking sensors, SatNav and metallic paint if you are willing to pay extra, but if you want to upgrade the air-con to a more advanced climate control system then take a look at the Titanium trim instead of the Zetec, which also features a much nicer central control panel.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

The Focus scored the full five stars in the Euro NCAP safety ratings and comes with a surfeit of driver aids and safety features to help keep you safe on the road.

You also get 1101-litres of storage space in the boot when the seats are put down, or 316-litres with the seats up, and it comes with a 3 year, 6000 mile warranty.

Value for Money

With its highly efficient diesel engine, reasonable insurance costs and solid resale values the Ford Focus Zetec S 1.6 TDCi will be good value for anyone who puts in a good number of miles, and the £19,845 price tag is pretty competitive too.

Combined fuel consumption is 67.3mpg and the Focus emits 109g/km of CO2, making it cheap to tax under VED band B.
