The Focus is a brilliant car and this Zetec 1.6 125ps is a fine choice offering good performance figures, low running costs and a smooth, refined ride. It's not quite as good as the Golf in the quality stakes, but the Focus arguably offers a superior all-round package.

PROS:  The Ford Focus is easily the best all-rounder in its class. It handles brilliantly, offers loads of space for both passengers and luggage and the 1.6-litre engine in this model is excellent.

CONS:  The ride is a little firm and the Focus' ubiquity may put of buyers looking to stand out from the crowd.

Behind the Wheel

The Ford Focus is a popular choice simply because it is a joy to drive. Though the suspension is a bit firm at low speeds the ride is not uncomfortable. The Focus has loads of grip and there is very little body roll through the bends. The steering weighs up nicely as the car picks up speed. The ride is acceptable though it is not as supple as a VW Golf. Visibility is good all-around.

The Focus' 1.6-litre petrol engine develops 123bhp and propels the car from 0-62mph in a respectable 10.9 seconds and on to a more than adequate top speed of 122mph.

Looks & Equipment

When the original Focus was unveiled in 1998, the public was astounded by its mad, original styling. In fact it was so revolutionary in its looks, Ford kept selling the old Escort for two years just in case buyers didn't go for it. Sadly this new model is pretty dull to behold. It's not ugly, it's just a tad boring. However, the interior is very stylish and has a dquality feel.

Standard equipment includes air-con, electric and heated mirrors, power steering, MP3/CD connectivity, alloy wheels and front foglights. Sat nav, cruise control, metallic paint, lane departure warning and rear parking sensors are all optional extras.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

The Ford Focus Zetec 1.6 125ps is narrower by 16mm than the previous model. The cabin is not as spacious as a VW Golf but it is big enough to comfortably seat four adults. It is actually a 5-seater but the 5th passenger might feel a bit cramped especially on long trips. The boot has the capacity to hold 316-litres with the rear seats up and 1101-litres with the seats folded down.

The Focus Zetec should be very safe having scored the maximum five stars in the Euro NCAP crash tests. A host of airbags and electronic stability control are included as standard.

The old Focus was a very reliable car and the new model should continue in its predecessor's footsteps. It comes as standard with a 3 year/60,000 mile warranty.

Value for Money

The Ford Focus Zetec 1.6 125ps is reasonably priced at £17,495 but you should be able to negotiate a significant discount on the list price.

Running costs should also be low as the Focus returns an impressive 47.9mpg on the combined cycle and emits just 136g/km of CO2. Group 14 insurance should also be relatively cheap.
