The Qubo is a decent mini-MPV which offers bags of practicality and a surprisingly rewarding driving experience for a low price. However, for an extra £1,000 you can get the diesel model which will be faster and much cheaper to run.

PROS:  The Fiat Qubo 1.4 is practical, comfortable and surprisingly good to drive.

CONS:  The petrol engine is underpowered and the Qubo is very slow. The diesel offers more grunt and is a lot more economical.

Behind the Wheel

Performance is not Qubo’s strength. It reaches 62 mph in 15.2sseconds with a top speed of only 96 mph. Its 1.4-litre petrol engine develops 73bhp and 87lb-ft of torque.

The Qubo is very comfortable thanks to its soft suspension, but this means that there is plenty of body roll through the bends. The steering is swift and light but lacks precision. The gearshift feels limp and vague.

The cabin is quite refined as road and wind noise are barely audible. The engine is quiet too, but expect occasional thumps and thuds through the rear suspension on bumpy roads. Visibility is great all around.

Looks & Equipment

The Qubo 1.4 My Life is based on a van which makes it very practical but fairly ugly. The dashboard is simply laid-out so all switches and knobs are easy to locate. The materials used in the cabin might not exude class and style but they are durable and practical.

The Qubo MyLife comes as standard with electric heated mirrors, electric windows, air-conditioning, power steering, MP3/CD connectivity, alloy wheels, front foglights and Bluetooth. Available options for this version are metallic paint, cruise control, rear parking sensors and an alarm.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

The Fiat's boxy shape means that the there is loads of headroom and legroom for both front and rear passengers. Rear access is easy thanks to the side-sliding doors. The boot compartment is more than adequate at 330 litres but it is possible to expand this to 2500 litres by folding the rear seats down.

The Qubo 1.4 has not undergone the Euro NCAP crash test. Its almost identical Citroen Nemo Multispace was only rated 3/5 because it lacked side air bags and ESP. However, the Qubo does have ABS, side airbags, twin front airbags, Isofix child seat mounting points on the outer rear seats and seatbelt pretensioners.

The Qubo should be mechanically reliable and the interior feels durable enough. It comes as standard with a 3 year/60,000 mile warranty.

Value for Money

The Fiat Qubo 1.4 MyLife is priced at £12,100 which is very good value for money considering the amount of space the Qubo offers. Resale values are also pretty respectable.

The Qubo should be relatively cheap to run, returning 42.8mpg (combined) and emitting 152g/km of CO2, meaning that it falls under VED band G. Group 3 insurance is also very reasonable.

However, for really low bills it may be worth upgrading to the 1.3-litre diesel model which is much more economical, managing a combined 68.9mpg and emitting just 115g/km of CO2.
