The Corvette ZR1 is a great performance car capable of impressive speeds and lightning fast acceleration. The 6.2-litre V8 engine under the bonnet is fantastic and makes the 'Vette feel like what it is - an all-American muscle car. Unsurprisingly, you'll struggle to top 20mpg and the Corvette cannot match its European rivals in terms of interior quality.

PROS:  A top speed over 200mph and electric performance make this a fantastic car to drive. The 'Vette also looks fantastic and, by buying one, you'll be buying into one of the most iconic brands in motoring history.

CONS:  Unfortunately, the external style of the Corvette is not carried on inside where gaudy plastics, a disorganised dashboard and inferior leather seats make a brand new car look positively out-dated. The Corvette's sheer size makes it tricky to drive on narrow roads and parking it will be an absolute nightmare. Fuel economy is also woeful.

Behind the Wheel

The Corvette's V8 chucks out 638 bhp at 6500 rpm with torque figures of 603 lb-ft at 3800 rpm, propelling the car from 0-62 mph in an impressive 3.6 seconds. With a top speed of 205 mph, it is impossible to go faster for cheaper and the sound of the Corvette's 6.2-litre engine is sensational.

The rear suspension is prehistoric - you get leaf springs. Despite this, however, the ZR1 is amazingly comfortable and composed. The ride is a bit hard and uncomfortable but, with 638bhp coarsing through the rear wheels, it kind of has to be. You might find that the seats are a little unsupportive and while this isn't a huge issue in most cars, the ZR1 can corner very quickly and you may find yourself getting thrown about a bit.

Looks & Equipment

You get a good range of standard equipment including central locking, power steering, stability control, alloy wheels, climate control, electric door mirrors, electronic front windows and cruise control.

For comfort and entertainment, leather seats and a CD compatible stereo system are fitted as standard with a built-in sat nav also on offer. This is something which is not available in the Corvette C6 and helps to differentiate the ZR1 from its rivals. Rear parking sensors are not even offered as an option, however - disappointing on a car that costs over £106k.

The ZR1 doesn't have the pedigree of a Porsche or a Ferrari but looks effortlessly cool in a blue-collar sort of way. The 'Vette has been around for 60 years next year and the car's illustrious history also lends the ZR1 kudos.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

A two-seater car, the ZR1 offers plenty of space for its passengers. The 634 litre boot is enormous - very few cars of this type can match it - making the ZR1 one of the most practical high-performance roadsters money can buy.

You get a full suite of airbags included as standard to protect you in the event of a crash. An alarm and immobiliser are standard features as well which should protect the car from theft.

You get a three year warranty and service intervals are every 10,000 miles. Servicing will be expensive, however.

Value for Money

The purchase price of £106,605 is very high but, considering what you get for your money, the ZR1 offers fantastic value for money.

The running costs are very high. You'll struggle to reach the 'Vette's claimed economy figure of 18.8mpg and, with CO2 emissions of 355g/km, you'll be paying £460 a year in road tax.

However, when you compare the ZR1 to the European opposition, it's remarkable good value. While the ZR1 doesn't offer the poise of a Ferrari or the quality of a Porsche, it is faster than almost any car you can buy and cheaper to boot.
