The Citroen DS3 is a head-turner. It certainly is one of the most chic models on the road today. It is a more exciting drive than other Citroen models but DS3’s handling and ride are no match for the MINI.

PROS:  The Citroen DS3 1.4 VTi is a truly eye-catching car and is a strong rival for the Fiat 500 and Mini. Its strong engine makes for a good driving experience and it is well-built and has a well-equipped and classy cabin.

CONS:  The rear seats are cramped and the small windows make the cabin dark and gloomy. The Citroen's handling is unspectacular and the MINI outclasses it in terms of driving pleasure.

Behind the Wheel

The Citroen DS3 1.4 VTi 95hp DSign 3dr is the entry level DS3. Its 1.4-litre petrol engine develops 95bhp and 99lb-ft of torque, getting the car from 0-62mph in 10.6 seconds and on to a top speed of 114mph. The DS3’s engine is well refined - road and wind noise are not intrusive but rear visibility is an issue due to the rather large B-pillars.

The DS3's steering is a bit light but body control is good. However the low-resistance tyres make for a bouncy ride on poor quality road surfaces.

Looks & Equipment

The Citroen DS3 1.4 VTi 95hp DSign 3dr is certainly a stylish car. The exterior styling is innovative and chic and is sure to make the car stand out from the pack on city streets. On the inside, the cabin feels very contemporary and cool but the low quality of some of the interior plastics spoils the overall feel of the interior.

Standard fittings are cruise control, central locking and electric windows, driver's seat height adjustment, variable power steering, height/reach adjust steering wheel, leather trimmed steering wheel with aluminium inserts, RDS stereo radio/MP3/CD player and more. Options are climate control, leather seats and rear-parking sensors.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

The 285 litre-boot space is impressive. What is more impressive though is that the boot is expandable to 980 litres when the seats are folded. The cabin is spacious enough but the rear seats are tight. This hatchback is a 5-seater but a fifth passenger will be cramped in the rear.

The DS3 1.4 VTi has a sterling 5/5 rating in the Euro NCAP overall rating. Safety features include stability control, airbags, ABS, traction control, Isofix and belt pre-tensioners. Every version of the DS3 is kitted with automatic door locking, remote and central locking and deadlocks.

Brand reliability has improved. There are no known major complaints for the DS3.

Value for Money

Despite its premium image the Citroen DS3 1.4 VTi 95hp DSign 3dr is still very affordable at £12,600. With a combined economy rating of 48.7mpg and CO2 emissions of 134g/km, the DS3 should be cheap to run, falling into VED band E and insurance group 13.

Though the DS3 1.4 VTi 95hp DSign 3dr is cheap, the addition of optional extras can raise the price dramatically. However, depreciation should be low and the DS3 1.4 VTi 95hp DSign 3dr comes with Citroen's 3 year/60,000 mile warranty and service intervals of 20,000 miles.
