PROS: This is the most economical model in the C4 range and offers low running costs thanks to sub-100g/km CO2 emissions.
CONS: The gearbox takes some getting used to and the relatively high purchase price will put some buyers off.
The 1.6-litre diesel engine delivers a strong power output of 110 bhp at 3600 rpm with 199 lb-ft of torque. This helps the vehicle to keep up with city traffic, achieving a top speed of 118 mph whilst accelerating from 0-62 mph in 11.2 seconds: both of which are an improvement over the smaller 1.4-litre petrol.
The ride is very comfortable thanks to soft suspension but this means that the handling lacks firmness and there is a fair amount of roll when going around corners. Wind and road noise are well isolated but the engine is very noisy when worked.
The C4 1.6 e-HDi (110) EGS VTR+ is a good looking car and comes with a decent amount of kit. Central locking, power steering, stability control, air conditioning, electric door mirrors, electric front windows, cruise control and an advanced stereo with CD and MP3 connectivity, rear parking sensors, Bluetooth connectivity and alloy wheels all comes as standard.
However, climate control is an option which costs £500. Those wanting to enhance the external appearance can update the model with a metallic paint finish costing £450.
The layout of internal equipment is fairly cluttered and this means that operating different controls can become a little difficult when driving.
In terms of space and storage capacity, the C4 is fairly roomy. The boot offers 380 litres of space when the seats are in place. This is increased to 1,183 litres when the seats are folded down and ensures families have all the room they need for both passengers and luggage.
The car comes with driver, passenger and front side airbags all fitted as standard and achieved a five star rating for overall safety in the NCAP crash tests. To protect the car from theft there is an immobiliser fitted as standard but an alarm is unavailable.
A three year warranty for 60,000 miles is available to help reassure buyers however and a service is recommended every 20,000 miles making maintenance costs fairly low.
Priced at £19,845 the C4 1.6 e-HDi EGS VTR+ is quite expensive for a C4. For the money, buyers get a fair range of in-car technology and insurance premiums are likely to be fairly low for this model, falling under bracket 18.
However, the car achieves an impressive 67.3 mpg on the combined cycle – a full 20 mpg more than the 1.4i VTi VTR. In terms of efficiency, green credentials are also much stronger and the car emits just 98g/km of carbon dioxide. This puts the model into the lowest road tax band (A) and means this charge is free for motorists. Resale values could be better and the C4 is likely to suffer steep depreciation.
