PROS: The C4 1.4i VTi VTR is comfortable and easy to handle on the road and is reasonably cheap to run.
CONS: The engine is a bit asthmatic and depreciation is a bit steep.
The 1.4-litre petrol engine produces 95 bhp and 100 lb-ft of torque. This helps the vehicle to keep up with city traffic, achieving a top speed of 113 mph whilst accelerating from 0-62 mph in 11.9 seconds. However on the open road, the engine feels asthmatic and underpowered - you're much better off plumping for a bigger engine.
Unfortunately, the soft suspension compromises the handling and there is a fair amount of roll when going around corners. The steering is a little wooly too.
The C4 is a very distinctive looking car and offers better looks than its rivals from Ford and Volkswagen.
Central locking, power steering, stability control, air conditioning, electric door mirrors, electric front windows, cruise control and an advanced stereo with CD and MP3 connectivity are available as standard.
However, climate control, rear parking sensors, Bluetooth connectivity and alloy wheels are not available and those wanting to enhance the external appearance can update the model with a metallic paint finish costing £450.
The car comes with driver, passenger and front side airbags all fitted as standard and achieved a five star rating for overall safety in the EuroNCAP crash tests.
The C4 is fairly roomy and that makes it a comfortable place to be for both driver and passengers. The boot is a decent size with 380 litres on offer when the seats are in place and 1,183 litres on offer when the seats are folded down.
Reliability is expected to be strong although features such as the directional headlights and electronic parking brake caused some concerns. A three year warranty for 60,000 miles is available to help reassure buyers however and a service is recommended every 20,000 miles making maintenance costs fairly low.
To protect the car from theft there is an immobiliser fitted as standard but the option to have an alarm is not available.
Priced at £15,750 the C4 1.4i VTi VTR is not the most expensive model on the market. For the money, buyers get a fair range of in-car technology and insurance premiums are likely to be fairly low for this model, falling under bracket 12 .
In terms of efficiency, the car achieves 46.3 mpg on the combined cycle. This is fairly decent for a small MPV but the diesel model offers better efficiency. The car emits 140g/km of carbon dioxide putting it into road tax band E and investing in the 1.6 e-HDi (110) EGS VTR+ may be a better option as it falls under band A, making road tax free.
