The 2.0-litre diesel engine also offers good performance, and does more than enough to justify the extra cost in comparison to the more basic 1.8-litre petrol unit.
PROS: A spacious and comfortable people carrier, the Citreon C4 Picasso 2.0 HDi Exclusive EGS6 also offers reasonably strong performance, and the diesel engine offers good fuel economy.
CONS: Of course you do not expect a big car to have the best handling, the the steering is particularly heavy and slow to respond on the Citreon C4 Picasso, so you have to take it slow around tight corners.
Featuring a 6-speed electronic automatic gearbox the Citreon C4 Picasso 2.0 HDi Exclusive EGS6 has a top speed of 118mph. Going from 0-62mph in 10.6 second, the 1997cc diesel engine produces torque of 251lb-ft at 2000rpm, and develops 150bhp. With a suspension system that is been well tuned for comfort, it gives you a smooth ride on most surfaces.
This strong performance is only let down by the somewhat heavy handling.
A great deal of effort has obviously gone into the appearance of this car, and it does pay off, making this one of the most attractive mid-sized people carriers on the market.
Most of the equipment that you would want is included as standard too, such as the power steering, stability control, cruise control and climate control, rear parking sensors and electric front mirrors, central locking, alarm and immobiliser, plus a full set of airbags. You also get a good quality stereo system with CD, plus MP3 and Bluetooth connectivity.
The only extras that you would have to pay for would be metallic paint (£450), leather seats (£2035), and SatNav system (£750).
With an overall NCAP rating of 5 this is a safe car which you can trust to protect your family. And as mentioned previously it is also very practical in terms of storage space. With the seats up you get a substantial 500-litre boot space, but this is increased substantially to 1734-litres with all of the seats down.
The running costs are very reasonable, with the Citreon C4 Picasso 2.0 HDi Exclusive EGS6 managing a highly respectable 41.5mpg, and its environmental credentials even better with CO2 emissions running at 137g/km.
Although the £22,800 list price may not look to competitive at first, this car does represent good value for money. You pay a little extra to get a lot extra, and the running costs may at least go some way towards paying back the higher initial investment.
